The district responded Sunday to a report of a 45-acre permitted, prescribed fire that had escaped the control lines at 12:46 p.m., officials reported.
The location of the fire was determined to have originated from Collier County and was burning into Hendry County. The fire did not burn into Lee County.
No homes or structures were threatened by the fire, officials said.
The location on State Road 82 was about one-eighth to one-quarter mile east of the Lee/Hendry line, south side of the road.
Lee and Hendry sheriff's offices and the Florida Highway Patrol temporarily closed SR 82 due to heavy smoke conditions and fire spotting across the highway.
Fire agencies from Lehigh Acres, Felda, LaBelle, Immokalee, Montura Ranch, Pioneer Plantation, Golden Gate, Collier County EMS and Florida Forestry responded.
The size of the fire was believed to be between 20 acres and 25 acres.
