LCSO releases 2012 crime report

While the number of violent offenses climbed last year in Lee County as compared to 2011, there was a drop in reported non-violent offenses.

The Lee County Sheriff’s Office released its 2012 annual Uniform Crime Report on Thursday, revealing a nearly 11 percent decline in total offenses overall. There were 10,095 crimes last year compared to 11,332 in 2011.

Violent offenses – murder, forced sex crimes, robbery, and aggravated assault and stalking – rose to 1,242 offenses last year from 1,198. The non-violent offenses, however, decreased from 10,134 in 2011 to 8,854.

Non-violent offenses are categorized as residential and non-residential burglary, theft and motor vehicle theft, according to the report.

Simple assault and stalking, domestic violence offenses and arson also experienced a drop from year to year. Simple assault and stalking incidents declined from 2,195 to 2,111 and arson incidents dipped from 48 to 31.

Domestic violence decreased from 1,658 in 2011 to 1,463 last year.

Jumps were seen last year in the areas of murders, forced sex crimes, aggravated assault and stalking, thefts under $50 and vehicle thefts.

The Lee County Sheriff’s Office reported a decrease in the total arrests. There were 14,584 arrests last year as compared to 15,797 in 2011.

The report states that the 2012 crime rate for Lee County was 2494.54, with a population of 404,521. The prior year, the crime rate was 2841.46, with a population of 398,809 – a more than 12 percent decline compared.
