Winners crowned in Mullet Toss competition

The Matlacha Mariners held its 22nd Annual Mullet Toss on Saturday, March 23, at Matlacha Park. The event kicked off with the children’s competition.

In the Fry Division (ages 1 to 5), the winner of the girl’s toss was Bella Brown, who threw for 13 feet, and in the boy’s toss Gavin Brannon won with a toss of 30 feet.

In the Fingerlings (ages 6 to 10) Division, Katie Grier prevailed over the other girls by throwing 32 feet. Zac Mills won the boys’ competition with a throw of 63 feet.

The last children’s competition as for juveniles ages 11 to 16. Winners were John Martin who threw a distance of 89 feet and Heather Jaques who threw a distance of 68 feet.

There was plenty of food and attendees ate lunch and enjoyed soft drinks and beer at the provided tables and chairs under the tent. Vendors offered T-shirts, jewelry and other craft items while the Matlacha Hookers helped the Mariners sell 50/50 raffle tickets.

The afternoon competitions included the Gray Division for those over 61. Claryn Ledy out-tossed the other women competing with a toss of 49 feet. Bill McKee won the Men’s Division with a toss distance of 105 feet.

The Adult Division included women and men ages 16 to 60. A mullet toss of 80 feet won the women’s plaque for Jennifer Nichols and Terry Summerson’s toss of 154 feet made him winner of the men’s competition.

The Mullet Toss is one of three annual fund-raisers held by the Mariners. Proceeds go to local charities.
