Lehigh Acres Citizen

Edible Gardening meetings scheduled

The 4-H Lehigh Acres Edible Gardening Exchange will meet from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. April 18 in the Veterans Park Recreational Building, at 55 Homestead Road S.

It is followed by the regular Lehigh Acres Edible Gardening Exchange meeting at 7 p.m. Each meeting hosts the same guest speakers for the day.

The venue requires a once-in-a-lifetime fee of $10 per person. A 4-H membership is $1 for the remainder of the 2012-13 year.

The regular meeting will feature $1 raffle tickets for 15 packets of summer seeds to benefit the 4-H.

Lee County Archers registering members

The Lee County Archers is registering new participants. The following events will take place at the Nalle Grade County Park Range in North Fort Myers:

- April 18: Open ranges from 2 to 8 p.m., including a 20-yard lighted covered pavilion, a 30- to 80-yard lighted outdoor range and a 28-target field range. Open to the public.

- April 21: 3D archery shoot. Sign up from 8 to 8:30 a.m.; shotgun start at 9 a.m. A $10 shooting fee applies.

- May 5: 900 round at 9 a.m.

General Women's Club to hold memorial service

The General Women's Club of Lehigh Acres will meet at 1 p.m. April 19 at Faith Lutheran Church on Leeland Heights Boulevard. There will be a memorial service for deceased members.

Bonsai Society of SW Florida to meet

The Bonsai Society of Southwest Florida will meet at 9 a.m. April 20 at Wigert's Bonsai Nursery, at 2930 South Road, North Fort Myers.

Ed Trout will demonstrate how to style a buttonwood tree. Admission is $10 and includes a raffle ticket for the demo tree.

Shredder Day planned

Celebrate Earth Day on April 22 with Shredder Day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Florida Lung & Sleep Associates, at 2625 Lee Blvd. Have your sensitive papers shredded - private and business - for $5 per file box including a certificate of destruction.

There will be a medicine drop box from the Lee County Sheriff's Office, clothes collection by the Kiwanis Thrift Store and information available on recycling, energy savings and water conservation.

There will be a drive-through set up to make it easy to drop off.

Junior League to host new member meeting

The Junior League of Fort Myers will host a new member information social from 6:30 to 8 p.m. April 25 in Room 125 at Nova Southeastern University, at 3650 Colonial Court, Fort Myers.

The league promotes voluntarism, helps develop the potential of women and improves the community. Women ages 21 and over who are interested in learning more are invited to attend.

Free legal advice at 'Law in the Mall'

The County Bar Association, with Florida Rural Legal Services and Lee County Legal Aid Society, will conduct its free annual "Law in the Mall" event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 27 in the Dillard's courtyard at the Edison Mall, at 4125 Cleveland Ave. in Fort Myers.

Attorneys will be available to meet with individuals for free to answer legal questions on topics including, but not limited to, bankruptcy, civil, elder law, family law, landlord and tenant, criminal, real estate/condominium, and wills, probate and estate planning.

The public is advised to bring any relevant documents for meeting with an attorney.

Registration at 9:45 a.m.

Attorneys will also present four free one-hour seminars on legal topics impacting Lee County's citizens. Space is limited for each seminar to the first 30 people who register at the event desk that day.

Community Plan Workshop planned

A Lehigh Acres Community Plan Workshop is scheduled from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. May 4 at the East County Regional Library, at 881 Gunnery Road N. The topic is "Kickoff of the Lehigh Acres Planning and Design Study."

Golf club to host Kentucky Derby Day

The Majestic Golf Club is hosting a Kentucky Derby Day starting at 4 p.m. May 4.

There will be a buffet and open bar for a nominal fee. There will also be a reverse raffle, a wide-screen TV set to watch the derby on and miniature horse racing.

Visitors should get their hats ready for the Best Hat Contest.

Scholarship applications now being accepted

The Lehigh Regional Hospital Auxiliary will award several $500 scholarships to participants studying medical education.

Applications can be picked up at the information desk in the lobby of the Lehigh Regional Hospital, at 1500 Lee Blvd.

Applicants must be a Lehigh Acres resident. Applications must be entirely filled out with all attachments to qualify.

The deadline is May 10.

Mom's Morning Out program for families

Mom's Morning Out is May 10 from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Alva Community Center, at 21471 N. River Road, Alva.

The program provides supervision for preschoolers ages 3-5 so mother can have a few hours to themselves. Participating children must be potty trained.

It includes inside games, play time, short movies, snack, playground, arts and crafts, and fun time with music.

Cost is $10 to register.

Eagle to speak before Lee Republican women

The Lee Republican Women Federated will meet May 13 at the Hilton Garden Inn, at 12601 University Drive in Fort Myers. Social hour begins at 11:15 a.m., followed by lunch and a program.

The guest speaker will be Rep. Dane Eagle, of the Florida House of Representatives District 77.

The cost is $16 to attend.

Bonsai Society to host annual picnic, auction

The Bonsai Society of Southwest Florida will hold its annual picnic and auction May 18 at the Fort Myers-Lee County Garden Council's Center, at 2166 Virginia Ave., Fort Myers.

Sidewalk sales and viewing of auction items will begin at 10 a.m., with the auction of trees and related materials beginning at 11 a.m. A lunch buffet will follow.

There is no admission fee, and parking and the lunch are free.

'Pickin' In The Park set

Musicians come together to perform during 'Pickin' In The Park from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursdays at the lodge by the lake at the rear of Veterans Park.

Farmer's Market set

A free Farmer's Market is held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays at the Majestic Golf Club, at 350 Homestead Rd.

The market offers fresh fruits and vegetables, crafts, music and food vendors.

Citizens can submit questions for county manager candidates

The public is invited to submit questions for Lee County commissioners and county staff to take under consideration and potentially use when they interview the future county manager.

The recruitment Web page was developed to provide the public with information about the search for a new county manager. It is now open for people who want to submit questions for the candidates.

The Lee County Board of County Commissioners is tentatively scheduled to interview the finalists in early June.

Additional information included on the site includes a recruitment timeline, information on the search firm facilitating the recruitment, a county manager profile and more.
