Libertarian Party of Lee County to meet

The Libertarian Party of Lee County will meet today, May 1, from 7 to 8:45 p.m. in the Judge Landis/Useppa Room at the Shoeless Joe’s restaurant at Bell Tower in South Fort Myers.

Dinner is served from 7 to 7:45 p.m. and is self-pay. The topic of discussion – “What is the proper role of government?” – will be presented at 7:45 p.m.

A Lehigh Acres Community Plan Workshop is scheduled from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. May 4 at the East County Regional Library, at 881 Gunnery Road N. The topic is “Kickoff of the Lehigh Acres Planning and Design Study.”

Golf club to host Kentucky Derby Day

The Majestic Golf Club is hosting a Kentucky Derby Day starting at 4 p.m. May 4.

There will be a buffet and open bar for a nominal fee. There will also be a reverse raffle, a wide-screen TV set to watch the derby on and miniature horse racing.

Visitors should get their hats ready for the Best Hat Contest.

African Violet Club announces plant sale

The Gulf-Edison African Violet Club will host its annual display and sale of African violets, gesneriads and other plants May 4 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Sabal Springs Golf & Racquet Club, located on U.S. 41 in North Fort Myers.

Experienced growers will be on hand to answer questions, as well as give demonstrations. There will be planting accessories for sale.

The Lee County Archers is registering new participants. The following events will take place at the Nalle Grade County Park Range in North Fort Myers:

Scholarship applications now being accepted

The Lehigh Regional Hospital Auxiliary will award several $500 scholarships to participants studying medical education.

Applications can be picked up at the information desk in the lobby of the Lehigh Regional Hospital, at 1500 Lee Blvd.

Applicants must be a Lehigh Acres resident. Applications must be entirely filled out with all attachments to qualify.

The deadline is May 10.

Mom’s Morning Out is May 10 from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Alva Community Center, at 21471 N. River Road, Alva.

The program provides supervision for preschoolers ages 3-5 so mother can have a few hours to themselves. Participating children must be potty trained.

It includes inside games, play time, short movies, snack, playground, arts and crafts, and fun time with music.

Cost is $10 to register.

The Lee Republican Women Federated will meet May 13 at the Hilton Garden Inn, at 12601 University Drive in Fort Myers. Social hour begins at 11:15 a.m., followed by lunch and a program.

The cost is $16 to attend.

The Bonsai Society of Southwest Florida will hold its annual picnic and auction May 18 at the Fort Myers-Lee County Garden Council’s Center, at 2166 Virginia Ave., Fort Myers.

Sidewalk sales and viewing of auction items will begin at 10 a.m., with the auction of trees and related materials beginning at 11 a.m. A lunch buffet will follow.

There is no admission fee, and parking and the lunch are free.

The Lee County Homeless Coalition will host the 5th annual charity golf tournament June 1 at the Colonial Country Club; shotgun start at 8 a.m.

Sponsorship opportunities offering signage on the course, complimentary player registrations and recognition at the awards luncheon range from $1,000 to $250.

Team and single-player participation is $100 per person. Registration includes 18 holes of golf with a cart, bagel and coffee breakfast, drink ticket and lunch. Space is limited.

The tournament will also feature several contests for prizes, and 3 Fisherman Restaurant will provide food samples on the course. An awards luncheon emceed by Lee County Commissioner Cecil Pendergrass will follow.

Lodge seeking garage sale items

The wives of the officers of Lehigh Acres Lodge 344 F&AM are collecting household items for a garage sale to be held this month.

The money raised will be used to assist with beautification of the existing building.

Clothing is not needed, but furniture, household items and garden items are being sought.

Residents can drop off items from 6 to 7 p.m. Mondays or call (239) 633-0739.

Public can submit questions for county candidates

The public is invited to submit questions for Lee County commissioners and county staff to take under consideration and potentially use when they interview the future county manager.

The recruitment Web page was developed to provide the public with information about the search for a new county manager. It is now open for people who want to submit questions for the candidates.

The Lee County Board of County Commissioners is tentatively scheduled to interview the finalists in early June.

Additional information included on the site includes a recruitment timeline, information on the search firm facilitating the recruitment, a county manager profile and more.
