LCSO: Man charged with murder after girlfriend dies

May 1, 2013
Lehigh Acres Citizen

A Lehigh Acres man was arrested and charged Monday with second-degree murder following his girlfriend's death in the hospital.

On April 2, deputies were called to 18 Alabama Road S. They learned Elizabeth Browder, 61, a disabled adult, had been severely beaten by her boyfriend, Billy Dwayne Elrod, 54, according to officials.

Due to the nature of the case, the LCSO Major Crimes Unit assumed the investigation.

Browder was transported to the hospital and made several statements to medical staff that her boyfriend/caregiver repeatedly struck her in the head. MCU detectives met with Elrod. During the investigation, he was arrested and charged April 4 for aggravated abuse on a disabled adult and given a $200,000 bond.

Browder remained in the hospital for continued medical treatment. She died April 24 as a result of the injuries sustained from his attack, officials reported. Elrod's charges were upgraded to murder.

He remains in the Lee County Jail with no bond.
