Harns Marsh Elementary, other schools earn grants
Four Lee County Public Schools have been awarded grants through the Tanger Outlets' TangerKIDS grants program.
The selected schools are:
- Harns Marsh Elementary School: Butterfly Garden Project - $1,000
- Gulf Middle School: Hands on History Project - $550
- Colonial Elementary School: The Science of Life Project - $950
- Cypress Lake Middle School: Robotics Exploratory Class - $1,000
The program assists schools by providing grants for special projects, needed programs or equipment. Schools are required to submit their project ideas. A committee reviews the requests and selects the schools that will receive funding. Grants are awarded based on need and program/project scope.
Two principals retiring from Lee County Public Schools
Lee County Public Schools announced the retirement of two longtime principals, Holly Bell at Orange River Elementary School and Stephen Hutnik at Alva Middle School.
Bell began her career with Lee County in 1972 as a teacher at Michigan Elementary, now known as James Stephens International Academy.
She touched the lives of students in various capacities at Orangewood Elementary, Lehigh Elementary, Gateway Elementary, Tice Elementary and Franklin Park Elementary, before becoming the principal of Orange River in 2005.
In addition to her work with Lee County Public Schools, Bell served as a member of the Hispanic American Business Alliance, where she was honored as Principal of the Year in 2010.
Hutnik began his career with Lee County in 1970 at Franklin Park Middle School, where he taught social studies for four years.
He moved on to Fort Myers High School, where he was dean of students for six years, Punta Gorda Jr. High School in Charlotte County as assistant principal, and Cypress Lake Middle School as assistant principal for eight years until he became principal and served for two more years.
He then became principal-on-assignment in staff development until finally settling in at Alva Middle, where he has been principal for 20 years.
Edison State hosts Academic and Student Life Ceremony
The Charlotte campus of Edison State College held its annual Academic and Student Life Ceremony on April 18 in the auditorium, where students celebrated their accomplishments.
Awards from "Tutor of the Year" to the anticipated "Who's Who Among Students in American Colleges and Universities" were given to those who worked diligently from the time they stepped foot onto the grounds of Edison State College.
The recipients received their degrees on May 3 at the Germain Arena in Fort Myers.
Lehigh Senior High plans 'Lightning Classic'
Lehigh Senior High School will host the 2013 "Lehigh Lightning Classic" Golf Tournament on June 1 at the Copperhead Golf Course in Lehigh Acres.
Registration is $250 per foursome and $65 for individuals. Fees include 18-holes of golf, cart, lunch and a chance to win various prizes.
