Two principals retiring from Lee County Public Schools

Lee County Public Schools announced the retirement of two longtime principals, Holly Bell at Orange River Elementary School and Stephen Hutnik at Alva Middle School.

Bell began her career with Lee County in 1972 as a teacher at Michigan Elementary, now known as James Stephens International Academy.

She touched the lives of students in various capacities at Orangewood Elementary, Lehigh Elementary, Gateway Elementary, Tice Elementary and Franklin Park Elementary, before becoming the principal of Orange River in 2005.

In addition to her work with Lee County Public Schools, Bell served as a member of the Hispanic American Business Alliance, where she was honored as Principal of the Year in 2010.

Hutnik began his career with Lee County in 1970 at Franklin Park Middle School, where he taught social studies for four years.

He moved on to Fort Myers High School, where he was dean of students for six years, Punta Gorda Jr. High School in Charlotte County as assistant principal, and Cypress Lake Middle School as assistant principal for eight years until he became principal and served for two more years.

He then became principal-on-assignment in staff development until finally settling in at Alva Middle, where he has been principal for 20 years.
