Open house at Juvenile Assessment Center

Opened in 2003, the Juvenile Assessment Center provides a wide range of services to prevent youth crime and to intervene when youth crime occurs.

The JAC will host an open house from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. today, May 22, to give the public a behind-the-scenes look at what happens when an arrested youth is brought in.

Parents will also learn about the other resources available to assist families before a youth’s behavior escalates out of control.

The JAC is at 2107 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd in Fort Myers. Parking available across the street from the Heitman Street entrance.

Florida High School Athletic Association swings into Lee County

More than 30 of Florida’s high school baseball teams are competing for their respective class titles through May 23 at JetBlue Park.

It will showcase 32 teams from the Florida High School Athletic Association Baseball Finals, including the contenders for the state championships in 1A, 2A, 3A, 4A, 5A, 6A, 7A and 8A.

Lee County has not hosted one of the state baseball finals since 1967. Bringing the event to Lee County was a combined effort of the Lee County Sports Authority, Lee County Parks and Recreation Department, the Red Sox and the Lee County School District.

Parking $8; admission $9.

Volunteer groups are needed for the event; service learning, service projects and corporate volunteering are available.

Greater Fort Myers Dog Club presents dog show

The annual Greater Fort Myers Dog Club event will be held from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. May 25-26 at the Lee Civic Center, at 11831 Bayshore Road, North Fort Myers. Judging begins at 8:30 a.m. daily.

More than 1,000 registered exhibitors will showcase 150 breeds at the American Kennel Club-sanctioned show. Attendees pay $10 per vehicle for parking and are admitted to the event for free.

The show includes conformation, obedience, rally trials and junior handling, as well as vendor booths filled with treats, toys and trinkets for dogs.

A Parade of Rescue Dogs, a nonprofit competitive event that recognizes and honors work done by purebred rescue groups, will be held May 25.

Sponsors, players needed for tourney

The Lee County Homeless Coalition will host the 5th annual charity golf tournament June 1 at the Colonial Country Club; shotgun start at 8 a.m.

Sponsorship opportunities offering signage on the course, complimentary player registrations and recognition at the awards luncheon range from $1,000 to $250.

Team and single-player participation is $100 per person. Registration includes 18 holes of golf with a cart, bagel and coffee breakfast, drink ticket and lunch. Space is limited.

The tournament will also feature several contests for prizes, and 3 Fisherman Restaurant will provide food samples on the course. An awards luncheon emceed by Lee County Commissioner Cecil Pendergrass will follow.

Free entry to pool on Saturdays for summer

In partnership with the Lee County Sheriff’s Office, Nations Association, Lee County Parks and Recreation and the Lee County School District, the Tice Community Pool is helping children cool off and take pride in their community this summer.

At 4515 Glenwood Ave., the pool will open June 1 and will be available to the public every Saturday from noon to 4 p.m. until Aug. 3. Admission is free.

Safety is a priority and a number of deputies and volunteers have become certified life guards for the outreach. Water safety instructions given on site.

Gardening workshops planned for children

Grow A Gardener, an eight-session weekly workshop on edible gardening, will be held from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. June 3 to July 29 at Veterans Park Recreation Center, at 55 Homestead Road S.

Sessions include soil, seeds, water, worm composting, plant parts, propagation, insects and fruit/vegetable identification. All instructors are volunteer Lee County Master Gardeners.

Children ages 8-15 can sign up online at: webtrac.leegov.com.

A materials fee of $20 per child is payable to the instructor. A $10 per person, or $25 per family, lifetime membership fee to Veterans Park is also required.

Cayuga Music Studio Spring Concert set

The Cayuga Music Studio Spring Concert will be held at 2 p.m. June 9 at Faith Lutheran Church, at 705 Leland Heights Blvd.

Come and hear all this year’s award winner; one student won more than $4,000. The event is free and open to the public.

The public is invited to submit questions for Lee County commissioners and county staff to take under consideration and potentially use when they interview the future county manager.

The recruitment Web page was developed to provide the public with information about the search for a new county manager. It is now open for people who want to submit questions for the candidates.

The Lee County Board of County Commissioners is tentatively scheduled to interview the finalists in early August.

Additional information included on the site includes a recruitment timeline, information on the search firm facilitating the recruitment, a county manager profile and more.

Musicians come together to perform during ‘Pickin’ In The Park from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursdays at the lodge by the lake at the rear of Veterans Park.

Volunteers serve 15-20 hours a week and receive a tax-free stipend of $2.65 per hour, transportation reimbursement of 40 cents per mile and a free physical, and earn vacation, sick and holiday pay.
