Teachers at Lehigh Middle recognized

Three faculty members at Lehigh Acres Middle School have been selected by the School District of Lee County as "Teachers of the Year" for 2012-13.

Debra Prashad, Jamie Lomas and James Lucius were honored and recognized. With the selection of this years' group, seven teachers from the school have been recognized over the past two years.

Prashad has been teaching for 18 years. Graduating from the University of South Florida with a bachelor's degree in specific learning disabilities, she first worked at Immokalee High School as a special education teacher and reading coach. She has been at Lehigh Middle the past six years teaching in the language arts and reading departments. She coordinates the LAMS Avid Program.

Lomas received her bachelor's degree from St. Joseph's University in Philadelphia, Pa. She also received her master's degree in art education at St. Joseph's and has been teaching art at the school for six years.

Lucius graduated in 2006 the valedictorian of his class receiving his bachelor's degree from the University of South Florida in special education. Prior to becoming a teacher, he played golf professionally for several years, but it was his love for children that brought him to education.

Head Start/Early Head Start program wins regional award

In April, the national Office of Head Start contacted the Lee County School District's Head Start/Early Head Start office to announce that it had been selected to receive the 2013 Region IV Award for Effective Family Engagement.

The program competed against all like programs in eight south eastern states. The announcement highlighted the department's innovative approach to family engagement and goal implementation while demonstrating the kind of strong leadership that begets positive outcomes and continuous improvement.

The Office of Head Start received many applications and shared that selecting a single award recipient was challenging. The announcement expressed that they appreciated Lee County's outstanding efforts in their Head Start community and that they are delighted to recognize the program's accomplishment in this area.

All regional award recipients were recognized at the Office of Head Start's "2nd National Birth to Five Leadership Institute," held in April in Maryland. Principal Jeanne LaFountain and social worker Rebecca Yance accepted the award on behalf of the program.
