Caldwell blasted; special session of legislature needed

By Staff | Jun 19, 2013

To the editor:

Gov. Rick Scott needs to call a special session of the Florida legislature in order to meet the deadline for accepting federal funds for the uninsured. His request to apply for federal funds must have approval by the legislature. The funds to insure the uninsured will be paid for in full for three years by the federal government. If Scott does not apply for these funds, they will go to other states.

These are tax dollars paid to the federal government by Floridians and should be spent in Florida if possible. If you currently have health insurance, please recognize that you pay higher fees (about $1,000 per year) because of the uninsured, who do not pay premiums and who put a strain on hospital emergency rooms. For example, Lehigh Regional Medical Center was going to pull out of Lehigh Acres because of the low payment rates here.

I regret that our local State Rep. Matt Caldwell, of Lehigh Acres, was a leader of the opposition to Scott’s acceptance of federal funds. Contact Rep. Caldwell in Buckingham and let him know that you want Florida to accept these funds.

Tell Gov. Scott and Rep. Caldwell that you want a special session of the legislature so that Florida can receive federal funds for Floridians without health insurance.
