Arts of the Inland member's first book picked as finalist

Author Patty Brant's mystery, "Bitter Secrets," was recently chosen as a finalist in the Indie 2013 Excellence Book Awards.

Published in April 2012, it is Brant's first book, a tale about a long-ago lost family whose memory will not quite go away. It is set in Southwest Florida's inland area, with the action moving to Georgia, then back to Florida to bring the mystery to its conclusion.

Brant is an editor and a member of the Arts of the Inland.

Edible Gardening meeting scheduled

The Lehigh Acres Edible Gardening Exchange will meet June 20 at 7 p.m. at the Veterans Park Recreational Center, at 55 Homestead Road S.

Lee County Extension agent Roy Beckford will talk about vegetable garden insects.

Day at the Races and Game Day planned

The Ladies Auxiliary of St. Raphael Council, Knights of Columbus will hold a Day at the Races and Game Day on June 22 at St. Raphael Church Hall, at 2514 Lee Blvd. Doors will open at noon, with lunch served immediately.

There will be horse racing, card games and Bingo games available.

There will be door prizes awarded, and 50/50 raffles and other raffles will be held.

Cost is $7 and includes lunch.

'Shrek' characters to visit with public

Cast members from the Broadway Palm Theatre's "Shrek the Musical" will stop by Sun Splash Family Waterpark in Cape Coral from noon to 1 p.m. June 22.

They will be available for photographs during the visit and the theater will hand out 500 free children's tickets to the musical.

Women's Club to discuss FGCU plans

The Democratic Women's Club of Lee County will meet at 10:30 a.m. July 13 at the Hilton Garden Inn at College Parkway and Summerlin Road.

The featured speaker is Dr. Richard Behr, dean of Engineering at Florida Gulf Coast University. He will speak on FGCU's plans for the future and its contributions to the cultural and economic strength of Southwest Florida.

Free entry to pool on Saturdays for summer

In partnership with the Lee County Sheriff's Office, Nations Association, Lee County Parks and Recreation and the Lee County School District, the Tice Community Pool is helping children cool off and take pride in their community this summer.

At 4515 Glenwood Ave., the pool will be open to the public every Saturday from noon to 4 p.m. until Aug. 3. Admission is free.

Safety is a priority and a number of deputies and volunteers have become certified life guards for the outreach. Water safety instructions given on site.

Citizens can submit questions for county manager candidates

The public is invited to submit questions for Lee County commissioners and county staff to take under consideration and potentially use when they interview the future county manager.

The recruitment Web page was developed to provide the public with information about the search for a new county manager. It is now open for people who want to submit questions for the candidates.

The Lee County Board of County Commissioners is tentatively scheduled to interview the finalists in early August.

Additional information included on the site includes a recruitment timeline, information on the search firm facilitating the recruitment, a county manager profile and more.

'Pickin' In The Park set

Musicians come together to perform during 'Pickin' In The Park from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursdays at the lodge by the lake at the rear of Veterans Park.

The public is welcome to join in playing or just enjoy the music. There is no charge.

Arthritis water exercise class offered at pool

Sponsored by the National Arthritis Foundation, a free exercise class will be held at 11:15 a.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Lehigh Community Park pool, at 1400 W. Fifth St.

Suitable for every fitness level, exercises focus on the activities of daily living, moving a joint through a range of motion and holding it to feel a gentle stretch in the muscle.

Guided by an Arthritis Foundation certified instructor, the 45-minute class is held in chest-deep water; no swimming ability is required. Lifeguards are always on-duty, and the pool has handrails and shallow steps leading in.

No registration is necessary.
