Man faces DUI charges after SUV strikes house in Lehigh

By Staff | Jun 29, 2013

A Fort Myers man has been cited with DUI after police say the vehicle he was driving in Lehigh crashed into a parked car, went airborne into a house and then landed on its side, trapping the man’s injured wife in the vehicle early Saturday morning.

Paul Edward Williams, 38, of 3635 Highland Avenue, was located and given notices to appear in court “on multiple DUI charges,” according to a release issued by the Lee County Sheriff’s Office.

Both he and the woman, who had to be extricated from the vehicle, had sustained head injuries and were taken to the hospital.

The injuries to driver and passenger are not believed to be life-threatening, officials said.

There was an adult and two children in the home at the time of the crash, but no one was injured.

The incident occurred at approximately 2:29 a.m. at 3709 23rd Street S.W. in Lehigh Acres. Arriving deputies found that an SUV had struck a parked car in a neighboring driveway and then the garage side of the residence listed. The vehicle had landed on its side and pinned the passenger inside.

The driver of the vehicle was seen by witnesses walking away, the release states.

Due to the nature of the crash, a detective with the Sheriff’s Office Traffic Unit was assigned to investigate. Preliminary details reveal the driver, identified as Paul Edward Williams, lost control while driving at a high rate of speed. He plowed through the cul-de-sac, struck the parked car and came to rest after going airborne to strike the roof and side of the home, according to officials.

Williams was located and transported to a local hospital with head injuries. Officials report that his blood alcohol content “was over two times the legal limit at .17.”

“He was given a notice to appear in court on multiple DUI charges including DUI with property damage and DUI with injury to another, as well as other traffic offenses. His license had been suspended, so he was cited accordingly,” the release states.
