To the editor:
It is important that everyone recognize that all our medical facilities are heavily impacted by providing unreimbursed services to the uninsured without any hope of payment:
- Lehigh Regional Hospital
- Lee Memorial Hospital
- Free clinic in Lehigh
- Ambulance services
- Lee Mental Health services (through Children and Family's budgeting)
This lost income can never be made up, except by the state of Florida receiving federal aid to provide this insurance. It is time for we the people to strongly urge Gov. Rick Scott to accept expanded Medicaid funds. The federal government pays the programs first three years completely, and almost completely thereafter for up to 10 years.
Let me point out these funds are Floridians' tax dollars that we can get back to help cover 1.1 million uninsured in Florida. If we fail to ask for our tax dollars to be put into Florida's needs, then Florida's tax dollars will go to help another state.
The decision by Gov. Scott, to forego a special session to address this, is foolish and is proof that Scott does not represent all of the people in Florida. Our local legislators are not representing all the voters, either.
Please join me in demanding that our governor and our legislators accept these funds. As continuing losses occur, undoubtedly we will have less money for salaries in these areas. Just tell me how this helps promised "job creation" in Florida.
Please contact Gov. Rick Scott, The Capitol, 400 S. Monroe St., Tallahassee, FL 32399-1050; telephone, (850) 488-4711.
