During the first week of August, thousands of breastfeeding women and their children will gather within their communities to join in the Big Latch On, a synchronized breastfeeding event held in various locations throughout the world.
Lee Memorial Health System will host Big Latch On events in honor of World Breastfeeding Week, which is organized annually by the World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action and is celebrated in 120 countries to raise awareness of the benefits of breastfeeding and the need for global support.
"Involving the community in a global event helps make breastfeeding more accepted as a part of everyday life. By removing social barriers we encourage mothers to continue for as long as possible, maximizing the benefits of breastfeeding for both her and her child," Nancy Travis, labor and delivery nursing director, said. "The Latch On is a great opportunity for us to show our support."
Registration will begin at 10 a.m. to take part in the Big Latch On at 10:30 a.m. Aug. 2 at:
- Cape Coral Hospital, New Cafe
- Gulf Coast Medical Center, Community Room
- Health Park Medical Center, Meeting Room 202
