Henry W. Walter

Henry W. Walter, 90, died Wednesday, July 31, 2013, at the Sterling House in Lehigh Acres. He was born Feb. 18, 1923, in Bonfield, Ill., to Benjamin and Anna (nee Freise) Walter.

He was the owner of Walter's Office Machines in Bradley, Ill., until his retirement in 1987.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving during WWII and the Korean Conflict.

He married Helen Neal on Sept. 20, 1947, in Peoria, Ill. She passed away in 1999.

They had three children, Ronellva (Edwin) Ziebart of Lehigh Acres, Gerald (Brenda) Walter of Bradley, Ill., and Dennis Scott (Kathleen) Walter of Virginia Beach, Va.

After they retired and moved to Florida, he began a woodworking hobby, which produced not only the furniture for their home, but gifts for family and friends.

He continued his love of softball and not only played for several years, but became active in the local umpires association in Southwest Florida, working both girls' high school and college play, as well as men and women's leagues. In recognition of his contribution, he received the first Lifetime Achievement Award from the local association in May 2011.

He is survived by his grandchildren, Lori (Todd) Keigher of Manteno, Ill., Jennifer (Brooks) Young of Hampton, Va., and Ryan (Amber) Walter of Virginia Beach, Va.; great-grandchildren, Sophie and Sevin Keigher of Manteno, Ill., Jace and Keagan Walter of Virginia Beach, Va., Donald Young of Hampton, Va., and Courtney Young of Mississippi; sisters, Ruth (Elbert) Walther of Kankakee, Ill., and Esther (Kenneth) Marcotte of Bonfield, Ill.; sister-in-law, Rose Evelyn (Albert) Fremaux of Peoria, Ill.; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; one sister-in-law; three brothers-in-law; three nephews; and one great-nephew.

Funeral services were held Monday, Aug. 5, at Christ United Methodist Church in Lehigh Acres.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to the charity of your choice.
