Edible Gardening meeting planned
The Lehigh Acres Edible Gardening Exchange will meet at 7 p.m. Aug. 15 in the Veterans Park Recreational Building, at 55 Homestead Road S.
The guest speaker is Linda Sapp, owner of Tomato Growers Supply Company. She will be discuss local tomato varieties.
After the first free visit, the venue requires a once-in-a-lifetime fee of $10 per person.

Free autism screening for young children
The Golisano Children's Hospital of Southwest Florida and the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Southwest Florida will offer a free autism spectrum disorder screening for children ages 18 months to 5 years old.
The screening will be held on the Ronald McDonald Care Mobile from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 15 at the Imaginarium, at 2000 Cranford Ave. in Fort Myers.
The screening is administered by an advanced registered nurse practitioner, who has extensive training and experience in typical child development and developmental disorders.

Alzheimer's caregivers support group to meet
The Alzheimer's caregivers support group will meet at 2 p.m. Aug. 19 at the Lehigh Acres United Way House, at 201 Plaza Drive, Suite 3. For information, call 437-3007.
Lehigh Children's Choir to begin rehearsals
The Lehigh Children's Choir is preparing for its sixth season.
Rehearsals will be held from 6-7 p.m. Tuesdays at Cayuga Music Studio, at 1100 Homestead Road, beginning Aug. 20.

Fire department budget hearing scheduled
The Board of Commissioners of the Lehigh Acres Fire Control and Rescue District will hold a budget workshop at 4:30 p.m. Aug. 27 at Station 104, at 3102 S.W. 16th St.
The public is invited to attend; the workshop is open to all.
Budgetary and fiscal matters will be discussed, including the 2013-14 fiscal budget and other business to come before the board. No decisions will be made by the board during the workshop.

Opening available on Youth Volleyball League
A Youth Volleyball League for ages 11-14 will be held Mondays, Sept. 9 through Oct. 14, from 6-7:15 p.m. at Veterans Park.
Learn how to set, bump, spike and serve. Teams will be formed and tournament games will be played the last two weeks.
Only 32 openings available.
Registration is $30; a $10 facility membership fee is required to participate.

Grow a Gardener registering participants
Sponsored by the Lehigh Acres Kiwanis, Grow a Gardener is an eight-session program designed to educate ages 8 and up on edible gardening in Southwest Florida.
Instructors are volunteer Lee County Master Gardeners trained by the University of Florida's Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences.
The workshops are held at 10 a.m. at Veterans Park Recreation Center, at 55 Homestead Road S. The workshop dates are:
- Sept. 16: Making soil out of sand, composting
- Sept. 23: The life of a seed, why to start from seed
- Oct. 7: Water needs of plants, Lee County water restrictions
- Oct. 14: Worm bins, fertilizers, Lee County fertilizer restrictions
- Oct. 28: Plant parts from root to seeds
- Nov. 4: Plant propagation, making more plants from the ones you have
- Nov. 18: Insects, do not kill the good guys
- Nov. 25: How you can enter and win at the Lee County Fair
The program has a limit of 10 participants. Graduates will receive a certificate of completion.
Fees have been reduced to a $10 lifetime membership fee to Veterans Park, plus $5 in materials paid to the instructor; Veterans Park members can drop in for $2.50 per class paid to the instructor.

Groups to host '2013 Spray Off'
In October, the Lehigh Acres Community Initiative, Keep Lee County Beautiful and the Lee County Sheriff's Office will host the 2013 Spray Off.
The competition allows youth to apply their mixed media artistic talents using spray paint on appropriate canvas and not on local homes, businesses and vehicles.
Twelve participants will be selected to enter the second round to paint from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Oct. 26 at Veterans Park.
All artwork will be displayed at the Lehigh Makes a Difference Day, which will take place the same day at the park from 3 to 8 p.m.

The deadline to register and send in artwork is Sept. 27.
Pickin' In The Park set
Musicians come together to perform during Pickin' In The Park from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursdays at the lodge by the lake at the rear of Veterans Park.
The public is welcome to join in playing or just enjoy the music. There is no charge.

Arthritis water exercise class offered at pool
Sponsored by the National Arthritis Foundation, a free exercise class will be held at 11:15 a.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Lehigh Community Park pool, at 1400 W. Fifth St.
Suitable for every fitness level, exercises focus on the activities of daily living, moving a joint through a range of motion and holding it to feel a gentle stretch in the muscle.
Guided by an Arthritis Foundation certified instructor, the 45-minute class is held in chest-deep water; no swimming ability is required. Lifeguards are always on-duty, and the pool has handrails and shallow steps leading in.
No registration is necessary.
