East County Library presents upcoming activities

The roster of activities at East County Regional Library offers topics for all ages. The following activities are free to the public:

Adults

– English Caf

10 a.m. Aug. 23 and 30

6 p.m. Aug. 26

Practice your English with English Cafe, a free, conversation session for adult ESOL and ESL students. Each 90-minute session provides adult learners an opportunity to practice speaking English with native speakers. Participants may start at any time. Advanced registration is not necessary.

– Chess Anyone?

4 p.m. Aug. 26

Rise to the chess challenge and join the fun. Chess enthusiasts of all ages are welcome! Bring a chess set or use one of ours. Sponsored by the Friends of the East County Regional Library.

– Introduction to Computers

2 p.m. Aug. 22

This class will present an overview of computer fundamentals. Learn the basics of using the mouse, understanding the desktop, some basic programs and search engines. Space is limited. Registration is required.

Family

– Family Storytime

6:30 p.m. Aug. 27

This program is for the whole family and lasts about 30 minutes.

– Toddler Storytime

10 a.m. Aug. 21 and 28

10 a.m. Aug. 22 and 29

Children 2 years old and their caregivers participate in song, fingerplays and short stories. The success of this age group depends on adult participation and encouragement. Toddler storytime lasts approximately 30 minutes.

Children

– Kids Read Down Fines

34 p.m. Aug. 24

Children and teens can earn a $2 coupon for every 15 minutes of reading, during the allotted time. A total of $8 per day may be earned. For ages 18 and younger. Coupons may be applied to cards issued to patrons age 18 and under only.

– Preschool Storytime

10:30 a.m. Aug. 21 and 28

10:30 a.m. Aug. 22 and 29

Preschoolers (ages 3 to 5) attend this storytime independently while parents or caregivers wait nearby in the library building. This storytime includes activities that require more participation and a longer attention span. Each preschool storytime lasts about 30 minutes.

Teens

– Chess Anyone?

4 p.m. Aug. 26

Rise to the chess challenge and join the fun. Chess enthusiasts of all ages are welcome! Bring a chess set or use one of ours. Sponsored by the Friends of the East County Regional Library.

– Wii Play Wii Dance

3 p.m. Aug. 26

Teens, visit the East County Regional Library and play Nintendo Wii. Play your favorite games and dance to your favorite songs. Game choice will vary from program to program. Snacks will be provided by the Friends of the East County Regional Library. Registration not required but is limited to 25 participants.

– Kids Read Down Fines

34 p.m. Aug. 24

– Crafty Teens: Perler Bead Bracelets and Keychains

3:30 p.m. Aug. 27

Create a bracelet or keychain using Perler Beads. All supplies provided by the Friends of the East County Regional Library. Registration is not required but is limited to 25 participants.

The East County Regional Library is at 881 Gunnery Road.

For information, call the library at (239) 533-4200. Sign language interpreter available with five business days notice to staff. Assistive listening system available.
