East County Regional Library announces activities

The roster of activities at East County Regional Library offers topics for all ages. The following activities are free to the public:

Adults

- Selecting, Grafting & Pruning Mango Trees

6 p.m. Sept. 4

Roy Beckford, agricultural and natural resources agent, will demonstrate the proper way to select, graft and prune mango trees. Registration is required.

- English Cafe

10 a.m. Sept. 6, 13, 20 and 27

6 p.m. Sept. 9, 16 and 23

Free, conversation session for adult ESOL and ESL students. Each 90-minute session provides adult learners an opportunity to practice speaking English with native speakers. Participants may start at any time.

- Foreign Film Series: Seven Minutes in Heaven

2 p.m. Sept. 7

Galia, a young Israeli, and her boyfriend Oren board a local bus. The bus explodes, leaving Oren in a coma and Galia with severe burns and such memory loss that she cannot remember the terrorist attack or the days leading up to it. The film begins one year after the attack, upon Oren's death. As Galia undergoes physical and mental therapy, she attempts to stitch together the shattered fragments of her life and soul. A necklace sent to her from an unidentified source sets her off on a journey to find the missing pieces of the puzzle from that horrific day.

- Book Discussion: The Lady in Gold by Anne O'Connor

3:30 p.m. Sept. 9

Enjoy snacks and a lively discussion about the events that shaped the creation of painter Gustav Klimt's masterpiece, Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer, including the story of the salon hostess who was his model, contributing factors in turn-of-the-century Vienna and the painting's fate.

- Chess Anyone?

4 p.m. Sept. 9, 16, 23 and 30

Chess enthusiasts of all ages are welcome. Bring a personal chess set or use the library's.

- Knitting Nook

5 p.m. Sept. 11

A fun, casual group of knitters and crocheters who love to get together to share project and technique ideas. Group is not facilitated by a professional knitting instructor. Some materials will be provided for newcomers, or bring a project to work on. Registration is requested.

- Southwest Florida Crime Stoppers

1 p.m. Sept. 12

Southwest Florida Crime Stopper Coordinator Trish Routte will explain how area crime can be stopped with a phone call. Tips which lead to an arrest or recovery of stolen property are eligible for a cash reward of up to $1,000. Registration is required.

- Container Gardening with Master Gardener Lee

2 p.m. Sept. 14

Bring a trowel and dig into techniques to foil nematodes and create a bountiful harvest. Lee will explain how to grow fresh fruits and vegetables in containers. Registration is required.

Family

- Family Storytime

6:30 p.m. Sept. 3, 10 and 17

This program is for the whole family and lasts about 30 minutes.

- Toddler Storytime

10 a.m. Sept. 4, 11, 18 and 25

10 a.m. Sept. 5, 12, 19 and 26

Children age 2 and their caregivers participate in song, fingerplays and short stories. The success of this age group depends on adult participation and encouragement.

- Baby-Parent Rhyme Time

10:30 a.m. Sept. 14

Be prepared to tickle, jump and fly with your baby. These rhymes and songs are for infants, up to 24 months, accompanied by an adult.

Children

- Preschool Storytime

10:30 a.m. Sept. 4, 11 and 18

10:30 a.m. Sept. 5, 12 and 19

Preschoolers (ages 3 to 5) attend independently while parents or caregivers wait nearby in the library building. This storytime includes activities that require more participation and a longer attention span.

- Wii for Kids

11 a.m. Sept. 5

No school; play some Wii.

Teens

- East County Anime Club

4:30 p.m. Sept. 3

Join a group of teens with an interest in Anime, Manga and other aspects of Japanese culture. Snacks provided. Registration is not required but the program is limited to 25 participants.

- DIY Teen Crafts

3:30 p.m. Sept. 10

Join a group of teens for some fun crafting events. Craft projects will vary at each program. All supplies provided. Registration is not required but the program is limited to 25 participants.
