Libertarian Party of Lee County to meet

The Libertarian Party of Lee County will meet today, Sept. 4, from 7 to 8:45 p.m. in the Judge Landis/Useppa Room at the Shoeless Joe's restaurant at Bell Tower in South Fort Myers.

Dinner is served from 7 to 7:45 p.m. and is self-pay.

Debbie Jordan, a candidate for the District 4 Lee County Board of County Commissioners seat, will speak at 7:45 p.m.

The club welcomes liberty-minded individuals of all party affiliations.

Openings available on Youth Volleyball League

A Youth Volleyball League for ages 11-14 will be held Mondays, Sept. 9 through Oct. 14, from 6-7:15 p.m. at Veterans Park.

Learn how to set, bump, spike and serve. Teams will be formed and tournament games will be played the last two weeks.

Only 32 openings available.

Registration is $30; a $10 facility membership fee is required to participate.

Garden Club to discuss butterflies, plants

The Garden Club of Lehigh Acres will meet at 7 p.m. Sept. 10 at the Fountain Crest, at 1230 Taylor Lane.

Joyce Comingore, master gardener since 1990 and a club member, will talk about "Lepidoptera I Have Known and Loved."

A plant auction will follow.

New members and guests are welcome. Annual dues $10.

All Walks of Art Festival kicks off in Cape Coral

Circus Arts United will host the All Walks of Art Festival from 7 to 11 p.m. on the second Friday of the month, starting Sept. 13, at the Italian American Club, at 4275 Vincennes Blvd., Cape Coral.

The festival will showcase 30 local artists and their works. Each artist will create a live piece of art to be auctioned off for charity.

The September show will benefit ACT, www.actabuse.com.

The event also features entertainment with 40-plus performers of various disciplines.

The event is free and family-friendly, with face painting, balloon art, magic show and a "graffiti" wall for the children.

Food and a full bar is available.

Professional Network for Women to host show

The Professional Network for Women is hosting a fashion show from 1 to 4 p.m. Sept. 15 at the Colonial Country Club in Fort Myers.

Some of the featured vendors include Jockey, Miche, Lia Sophia and Mary Kay.

Cost is $15 and includes a light lunch, dessert, coffee and tea. A cash bar will be available.

All of the proceeds will benefit Dress for Success.

Grow a Gardener registering participants

Sponsored by the Lehigh Acres Kiwanis, Grow a Gardener is an eight-session program designed to educate ages 8 and up on edible gardening in Southwest Florida.

Instructors are volunteer Lee County Master Gardeners trained by the University of Florida's Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences.

The workshops are held at 10 a.m. at Veterans Park Recreation Center, at 55 Homestead Road S. The workshop dates are:

- Sept. 16: Making soil out of sand, composting

- Sept. 23: The life of a seed, why to start from seed

- Oct. 7: Water needs of plants, Lee County water restrictions

- Oct. 14: Worm bins, fertilizers, Lee County fertilizer restrictions

- Oct. 28: Plant parts from root to seeds

- Nov. 4: Plant propagation, making more plants from the ones you have

- Nov. 18: Insects, do not kill the good guys

- Nov. 25: How you can enter and win at the Lee County Fair

The program has a limit of 10 participants. Graduates will receive a certificate of completion.

Fees have been reduced to a $10 lifetime membership fee to Veterans Park, plus $5 in materials paid to the instructor; Veterans Park members can drop in for $2.50 per class paid to the instructor.

Educational program aims to help caregivers

Powerful Tools for Caregivers will be held on Tuesdays for six weeks, beginning Sept. 17, from 1 to 4 p.m. at Hope Care Center, 1201 Wings Way.

The educational series is designed to help family caregivers reduce stress, improve self-confidence, communicate feelings better, balance their lives, increase their ability to make hard decisions and locate helpful resources.

Interactive lessons, discussions and brainstorming will help participants put the "tools" they learn into action for their life.

If needed, special discounts for companionship care in the home are available for participants during the weekly class times.

Participants will receive a book, "The Caregiver Helpbook," for the class. A donation of $30 to help defray the cost of the book is suggested, but not required.

Class size is limited and pre-registration is required.

Senator to be in Lehigh

Florida Sen. Garrett Richter will meet with constituents from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sept. 19 at the Greater Lehigh Acres Chamber of Commerce, at 25 Homestead Road N., Suite 41.

Richter and his staff will be available to assist with questions, concerns or ideas on how to improve the community.

Groups organize '2013 Spray Off'

In October, the Lehigh Acres Community Initiative, Keep Lee County Beautiful and the Lee County Sheriff's Office will host the 2013 Spray Off.

The competition allows youth to apply their mixed media artistic talents using spray paint on appropriate canvas and not on local homes, businesses and vehicles.

Twelve participants will be selected to enter the second round to paint from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Oct. 26 at Veterans Park.

All artwork will be displayed at the Lehigh Makes a Difference Day, which will take place the same day at the park from 3 to 8 p.m.

The deadline to register and send in artwork is Sept. 27.

Lehigh Singers to hold auction

The Lehigh Singers auction will be held at 7 p.m. Sept. 28 at the Royal Palm Square in Fort Myers.

The art for sale will be on display at ABC Framing, at 12801 Commerce Lake Drive, Suite 314, Fort Myers. Hours of operation are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday-Friday.

Estimates and appraisal prices for the silent and live auctions will be available at the store.

Art by internationally acclaimed artist ZAKI will be on display, as well as with many nationally acclaimed artists.

Pickin' In The Park set

Musicians come together to perform during Pickin' In The Park from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursdays at the lodge by the lake at the rear of Veterans Park.

The public is welcome to join in playing or just enjoy the music. There is no charge.

Pool offering fall swim lessons, water aerobics

The Lehigh Acres Community Pool, at 1400 W. Fifth St., is hosting fall swim lessons. A range of skill levels are offered for all ages by American Red Cross-certified instructors. Eight classes are $50.

Commit to get fit with aqua aerobics. Choose the fast-paced workout at 10:30 a.m. Tuesdays through Fridays, or the low-impact National Arthritis Foundation-sponsored class at 1:15 p.m. Tuesdays and Fridays. Classes are in chest-deep water, 45 minutes in length and do not heavily impact joints.

There are lifeguards on-duty; lap swimmers are welcome.

Admission is $3 for adults, $2 for ages 17 and under, and $2 for seniors.
