Even though a merger between the Lehigh Community Council and the Lehigh Acres Community Planning Panel is almost a certainty, the council is still is looking for seven members to be elected for a three-year term each year.

There is an annual election of members who want to join the Community Council.

Presently, before any merger with the Lehigh Acres Community Planning Panel, there are 21 elected members, with seven members being elected for a three-year term each year. That meets requirements of the council's bylaws.

The term for the new seven members is for three years.

If you would like to be on the Community Council, there are a few requirements which include that you must be a citizen of Lehigh who has lived here for at least a year and you must be a registered voter.

Also, you will need the signatures of 20 registered voters who want to support your candidacy.

Anyone who thinks they would like to help Lehigh Acres improve and become a better place to live in should consider running for a seat on the Council, said Jim Kreger, president.

"We have access to the county commissioners, Dept. of Transportation and many other agencies which set policy for Lehigh Acres. If you think you can help, pick up an application to become a member," said Rick Anglickis, an officer and past president of the organization.

Applications will be available during September and must be turned in by October 15.

You can pick up an application at the Greater Lehigh Acres Chamber of Commerce at 25 Homestead Rd. which is in the shopping center on the corner of Alabama and Homestead roads and across from the Walgreens pharmacy.

You will need to get the signatures of 20 registered voters who wish to support your candidacy and return them to the chamber prior to October 15.

The election will be held during November with ballots returned by November 27. Ballots will be available at the Greater Lehigh Acres Chamber of Commerce office beginning on November 1.

According to the Community Council, the seven people with the most votes will be elected and notified in December with installation in January of 2014.

Anglickis said members of the Lehigh Acres Community Planning Panel have been negotiating a merger with the Community Council. There may be several from the LACPP as its membership numbers 13 people, but a few of them are already members of the Community Council.

"That's going to take place," Anglickis said.

The Community Council meets on the third Monday night of each month at 6 p.m. at the Lee County Sheriff's Bravo Station large conference room at the rear of the building with entry off of Plaza Drive.

The public is always invited to attend and participate in the meetings.

The Council is considered the mouth piece for Lehigh Acres as it relates requests and complaints with the Lee County Commission, according to Lee County Commissioner Frank Mann, who attended the last meeting and encouraged the LACPP and the Community County to come together as one group.
