Open house held for Cambridge program

Lehigh Acres Middle School hosted its first open house Oct. 3 on the new Cambridge Academic Program.

The school is one of two middle schools in Lee County that will offer the vigorous high-level academic program in the core subjects of science, math and language arts to participating students.

At the open house, parents were able to view student work, meet with Cambridge teachers and hear of new and exciting things coming to the program.

Lehigh Middle names new assistant principal

Dr. Chevonese Anderson-Thomas has been promoted to the position of assistant principal at Lehigh Acres Middle School.

Anderson-Thomas has served as data coach at the school for the past four years.

She will now oversee the new Cambridge Academic Program and will serve as coordinator of Parent Involvement.

ALC Central hires new assistant principal

The Alternative Learning Center Central recently appointed Johnnie Mae Hawkins as the new assistant principal.

Hawkins is a former Lehigh Acres Middle School teacher and served in several capacities, including assistant to the assistant principal for Student Affairs.

She also served as assistant athletic director, head coach for girl's track and the school's health and fitness coordinator.

School gallery to show photography exhibit

Cypress Lake High School Center for the Arts invites the public to its first show of the season, presenting recent works by Kimberly Hambor.

"Seeing The Light," a photography exhibit, runs through Oct. 18.

Hambor was born in Ohio. In the 7th grade, her science fair project was a pinhole camera and portable darkroom; the photographs for this project received state recognition.

She went on to graduate from the University of Akron with a degree in commercial art. During her post graduation work, she was an advertising photographer, sculptor and product designer.

Hambor moved to Naples in 1988, where she worked as a graphic artist for Prestige Printing. She also started a stock photography business, in which her images were featured in publications like billboards, magazines and coffee table books.

She now runs a photography studio and exhibits her work nationally and internationally. She is known for her representations of Florida and use of infrared photography.

New chess club forms

A new chess club has formed at Lehigh?Acres Middle School.

Teacher Sam Sokhanvari is the club sponsor and will oversee the school club.

The chess club meets every Thursday before school from 8:30 to 9:15 a.m.
