'Dogtober,' 'Caturday' adoption deals offered

October has officially been deemed "Dogtober" at Lee County Domestic Animal Services.

LCDAS has reduced the adoption fee for all animals to just $25 - cats are included.

In addition, all Saturdays in October will be replaced by "Caturdays" and all feline adopters will receive a kitty goody bag.

Cats and kittens also may be adopted two for the price of one.

All adoptions include spay or neuter surgery, age-appropriate vaccinations, microchip ID, and many other veterinary services valued at more than $500.

Free monthly art demo

Instructor June De Vincent will give a free demonstration of a different art medium on the third Wednesday of each month from noon to 2 p.m. at the Veterans Park Recreation Center, at 55 Homestead Road S.

For ages 14 and older.

The schedule is as follows:

- Today, Oct. 16: Watercolors

- Nov. 20: Pastels

- Jan. 15: Rice paper

- Feb. 19: Optical illusion art

Edible Gardening meetings scheduled

The Lehigh Acres Edible Gardening Exchange will meet at 7 p.m. Oct. 17 in the Veterans Park Recreational Building, at 55 Homestead Road S.

The guest speaker is Brad Ward, with ECHO. He will discuss tomato grafting. There will be a $2 materials fee to graft.

After the first "trial" visit, the venue requires a $10 lifetime membership fee; the meetings are free.

The Junior Edible Gardening Club 4-H Exchange will meet prior to the adult exchange meeting.

The exchanges host the same guest speaker; a 4-H membership fee of $15 is required.

Seeds are started at every 4-H meeting. The seedlings are later entered in the Lee County Fair.

General Woman's Club presents guest speaker

The General Woman's Club of Lehigh Acres will meet at 1 p.m. Oct. 18 at Faith Lutheran Church, at 705 Leeland Heights.

The guest speaker will be Karen McKenzie.

Refreshments will be served.

Rodrigues to speak at monthly meeting

The Lee County Patriots will meet at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 18 at the Matlacha Community Center, at 4577 Pine Island Road N.W., Matlacha.

The public is invited to attend.

The guest speaker is state Rep. Ray Rodrigues. Rodrigues represents District 76, which includes Bonita Springs, Fort Myers Beach, Sanibel and Pine Island.

He will speak about issues pertinent to the district, as well as how Florida is dealing with state and federal programs and mandates.

Questions are invited from the public. There will also be an open floor discussion on current events.

Lehigh Democrats to host fundraiser

The Lehigh Democrats will host an afternoon social and fundraiser for Larry Aguilar from 2 to 4 p.m. Oct. 19.

Aguilar is a candidate for the Florida House District 79 seat.

Luncheon card party, game day planned

The General Woman's Club of Lehigh Acres will have a luncheon card party/game day from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 19 at Faith Lutheran Church, at 705 Leeland Heights Blvd.

Bring cards or game of your choice; card tables will be set up. Tickets for a 50/50 raffle will be available.

Cost is $7 and includes a light lunch. All money raised is given back to the community.

Alva Community Center to have arts, crafts

The Alva Community Center presents arts and crafts night from 6 to 8 p.m. Oct. 25.

For children ages 7-12 who want to come out and create a special arts and crafts project.

Cost is $5 per child. Juice and cookies will be provided.

Pre-registration required.

The program may be canceled if the minimum of 10 participants is not meet.

Companion planting class for gardeners

Lee County Master Gardener Karen Harty will speak at 10 a.m. Nov. 2 at the East County Regional Library, at 881 Gunnery Road N.

The presentation is free.

Harty will talk about companion planting. Help your garden grow by learning what plants poison other plants, fertilize other plants, battle insects, fight disease and attract beneficial insects.

Rotary announces Rock, Blues and Blues Festival

The Rotary Club of Lehigh will host the Second Annual Rock, Blues and Brews Festival from 3 to 10 p.m. Nov. 9 at the Mirror Lakes Golf Club, at 670 Milwaukee Blvd.

The event features beers, food and a horseshoe tournament. Performers include Live N Learn, Hidden Agenda, and Rex Bongo and the Sophisticated Hippies.

Admission is $5 per person. The event is a cash only event.

Attendees are encouraged to bring their own chairs, but no coolers or outside food or drink.

Registration for the horseshoe tournament is $50 per two-person team. Each team will receive a $10 food/beverage credit and will be competing for cash prizes.

All of the proceeds will benefit the Rotary Club of Lehigh, which uses the funds to support local schools and community activities.

Call for artists

The Arts of the Inland invites artists to apply for its juried Perceptions Art Show to be held Nov. 10 in the Crown Room at the Majestic Golf Club.

The submission deadline is Oct. 29. Prospectus and application are available online at: www.artsoftheinland.com.

Entry fees for Arts of the Inland and Art Council of Southwest Florida members is $10 per art work, or $20 per art work for non-members.

Pool offers fall swim lessons, aerobics

The Lehigh Acres Community Pool, at 1400 W. Fifth St., is hosting fall swim lessons. A range of skill levels are offered for all ages by American Red Cross-certified instructors. Eight classes are $50.

Commit to get fit with aqua aerobics. Choose the fast-paced workout at 10:30 a.m. Tuesdays through Fridays, or the low-impact National Arthritis Foundation-sponsored class at 1:15 p.m. Tuesdays and Fridays. Classes are in chest-deep water, 45 minutes in length and do not heavily impact joints.

There are lifeguards on-duty; lap swimmers are welcome.

Admission is $3 for adults, $2 for ages 17 and under, and $2 for seniors.

Pickin' In The Park scheduled each week

Musicians come together to perform during Pickin' In The Park from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursdays at the lodge by the lake at the rear of Veterans Park.

The public is welcome to join in playing or just enjoy the music. There is no charge.
