East County Regional Library lists October programs

The roster of activities at East County Regional Library offers topics for all ages. The following activities are free to the public:

Adults

- Chess Anyone?

4 p.m. Oct. 21 and 28

Rise to the chess challenge and join the fun. Chess enthusiasts of all ages are welcome! Bring a personal chess set or use the library's. Sponsored by the Friends of the East County Regional Library.

- Wii Bowling for Seniors

10 a.m. Oct. 24

Who is gaming now? Join other seniors as they bowl their way to fun and fitness. Registration is required.

- English Cafe

6 p.m. Oct. 21 and 28

10 a.m. Oct. 18 and 25

Practice your English with English Cafe, a free, conversation session for adult ESOL and ESL students. Each 90-minute session provides adult learners an opportunity to practice speaking English with native speakers. Participants may start at any time. Advanced registration is not necessary.

- Library Books for E-readers

10:30 a.m. Oct. 17

Learn how to check out library e-books to read on a Nook, Kindle or other e-reader device. Please bring a personal device to class (and a laptop if using a Nook reader). Class size is limited to 10 participants. Registration is required.

- Happy Holidays Rubber Stamp Cardmaking

10 a.m. Oct. 19

Get ready for the holidays! Create your own card with rubber stamps. Gift it to that special person or keep it for yourself. Supplies included. Registration is required.

- Common Diseases & Problems of Mango Trees

6 p.m. Oct. 23

Roy Beckford, Lee County Extension Service Agriculture and Natural Resources Agent, will present information on the common diseases and the various problems of mango trees in Florida. Registration is required.

- Native Gardening for Butterflies and Birds

10 a.m. Oct. 26

Join LeAnn and Phyllis as they demonstrate how to transform the average yard into a Florida Eden. Beauty and life can be added to gardens with the inclusion of specific plants that butterflies and birds love. Each attendee will receive a free plant. Registration is required.

Family

- S.T.E.M. Storytime

10 a.m. Oct. 17

Join us for a special inter-session storytime with a fun focus on Science, Technology, Engineering, or Math. A hands-on activity will be included.

- Family Storytime

6:30 p.m. Oct. 29

This program is for the whole family and lasts about 30 minutes.

- Toddler Storytime

10 a.m. Oct. 30

10 a.m. Oct. 31

Children 2 years old and their caregivers participate in song, fingerplays and short stories. The success of this age group depends on adult participation and encouragement. Toddler storytime lasts approximately 30 minutes.

- Kids Read Down Fines

Children and teens can earn a $2 coupon for every 15 minutes of reading, during the allotted time. A total of $8 per day may be earned. For ages 18 and younger. Credit may be applied to cards issued to patrons age 18 and under only.

- Di de los Muertos Storytime

10:30 a.m. Oct. 25

A bilingual storytime for preschoolers in honor of ancestors. A special craft will follow.

- Creepy Crafts

2 p.m. Oct. 26

Make Halloween decorations while listening to spooky music. Come dressed in a costume to try it out before the big night.

- Preschool Storytime

10:30 a.m. Oct. 30

10:30 a.m. Oct. 31

Preschoolers (ages 3 to 5) attend this storytime independently while parents or caregivers wait nearby in the library building. This storytime includes activities that require more participation and a longer attention span. Each preschool storytime lasts about 30 minutes.

Teens

- Wii Play Wii Dance

2 p.m. Oct. 28

Teens, visit the East County Regional Library for an hour of Nintendo Wii. Play favorite games and dance to favorite songs. Game choice will vary from program to program. Registration is not required but the program is limited to 25 participants.

- Kids Read Down Fines

- Game On! Board Games!

Teens are invited to stop by the East County Regional Library to play a variety of board games at this relaxed and fun for all program. Registration is not required but the program is limited to 25 participants.
