A second person has died as a result of a traffic accident last week, according to authorities.
Taylor Messina, 19, of 2002 E. 14th St., passed away Tuesday from sustained injuries.
At 4:31 p.m. Friday, the Lee County Sheriff's Office received multiple calls about a serious traffic crash at Joel Boulevard and East 15th Street.
Upon arrival, an 18-wheel semi-truck and trailer were located just south of the intersection and a Toyota 4-Runner was found on its side in a grassy area on the east side of Joel.
The driver of the SUV, who has since been identified as Clayton Hayes, 22, of 5517 Petunia Drive, McKinney, Texas, was pronounced dead on scene.
Two passengers, Taylor Messina and Tyler Messina, also 19, of 2002 E. 14th St., were transported as trauma alerts to Lee Memorial Hospital. Tyler Messina remained in critical condition Tuesday.
The driver of the semi-truck, Jose Machin, 43, of Miami Gardens, was not injured and is not at fault in the accident.
Due to the nature of the incident, the LCSO traffic unit was requested and a traffic homicide detective assigned to investigate.
The Florida Highway Patrol and Lehigh Acres Fire Department also provided assistance.
Preliminary details indicate that Hayes was eastbound on 15th Street, failed to stop at the stop sign at the intersection and drove into the path of the semi.
It is not known, at this time, why Hayes failed to stop while attempting to turn south on Joel.
Machin was unable to avoid colliding with the driver side of the vehicle. A load of preformed concrete slabs were jettisoned from the trailer as a result of the crash.
The District 21 Medical Examiner will conduct an autopsy to determine official cause of death.
The investigation continues.
