Annual financial aid nights set for students
The School District of Lee County has partnered with a local financial aid expert to host several financial aid nights.
The events will run from 7 to 9 p.m. on the following dates:

- Nov. 19: Lehigh Senior High School, at 901 N. Gunnery Road
- Nov. 20: South Fort Myers High School, at 14020 Plantation Road, Fort Myers
- Jan. 16: Dunbar High School, at 3800 Edison Ave., Fort Myers
Parents are invited to attend the most convenient event.
Attendees will learn about the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) form and steps they need to take to help their children receive federal financial aid from postsecondary institutions like colleges, community colleges and high tech centers.
College financial aid experts will cover the definition of financial aid, how to apply, deadlines, step-by-step instructions for completing the FAFSA, Bright Futures, state aid versus federal aid and more.
Riverdale student wins Wendy's Heisman award
Riverdale High School senior Chenelle Walker has been named a state winner for the Wendy's High School Heisman Award.
Since 1994, the program has honored more than 395,000 of the nation's most esteemed high school seniors in partnership with the Heisman Memorial Trophy Committee.
The award is an honor reserved for students who excel in academics, athletics and leadership.
Chenelle holds a GPA of 5.08 and is a member of the top 1 percent of all seniors in Lee County.
She is a four-year varsity member of the volleyball, basketball and track teams and is a two year All-Conference member in volleyball for both the Lee County Athletic Conference and the Florida Coaches Association.
Chenelle will sign a letter of intent today to play volleyball at the University of Iowa.
She is in the International Baccalaureate program, National Honor Society, Spanish Honor Society, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Math Team, Interact Club, Chorus and Art Club.
She also volunteers as the Alzheimer's art therapy director at the Winkler Court Rehabilitation Center.
