State, Obama to cooperate on saving canceled policies

By Staff | Nov 20, 2013

President Barack Obama has announced that he will have insurers reinstate anyone’s canceled health insurance policies, and Florida officials have assured the White House that they will fully cooperate.

That is the word that U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson (D-FL) got from a top administration official just before the president went on national television Thursday to make the announcement about the policies.

Because health insurance is regulated by the state, Florida officials will have to approve reinstatement of the canceled policies.

“Congress enacted health care reform to help uninsured Americans get coverage, and it was not intended to take away from folks policies they’re happy with,” Nelson said. “The president did the right thing today. Now, the administration has to fix the website and start getting new enrollees through the door.”

As a former Florida Cabinet member and the elected insurance commissioner of Florida in the mid-1990’s, Nelson’s duties included regulating health insurance.
