New chairman, vice chairman elected to Lee County Commission

The annual election of the chairman and vice chairman of the Lee County Board of County Commissioners took place recently at a regular board meeting.

Commissioner Larry Kiker was nominated and elected by unanimous voice vote to serve as chairman, and Commissioner Brian Hamman was nominated and elected by unanimous voice vote to serve as vice chairman.

The chairman and vice chairman shall serve a one-year term.

Board meetings are held on the first and third Tuesday of each month in the commission chambers, at 2120 Main St., Fort Myers.

Lee County Domestic Animal Services is giving adopters a chance to receive $30 off the regular adoption fee in November.

When it comes to felines, get twice the love with two-for-one adoptions for all cats and kittens.

All adoptions include spay or neuter surgery, age-appropriate vaccinations, microchip ID and many other veterinary services, valued at more than $500.

Adoption applications may be submitted online.

Beginning Nov. 30, all black and mostly black cats will be available for adoption for just $10.

Animal Services always offers two-for-one cat adoptions so adopters have the option of getting two cats for $10.

For the event, felines will be wearing their little black dresses and tuxedos as black cats are always in formal attire.

The variety available includes solid black, tuxedo (black and white), tortoise shell and black tabby, not to mention short, medium and long haired cats.

Potential adopters will have lots to choose from and are encouraged to check the agency’s Web site at: www.leelostpets.com for a peek at the cats and kittens currently available or to submit an adoption application online.

The site updates hourly.

All cats adopted are sterilized and receive age appropriate vaccinations, flea treatment, de-worming, microchip ID, feline aids and leukemia test, and county license for cats three months and older.

In support of the Marine Corp’s Toys For Tots Foundation, United States Postal Service letter carriers will collect new, unwrapped toys left at mailboxes as they deliver mail on Dec. 7.

Participation is open to all post office customers in the Suncoast District, which includes ZIP codes beginning with the following first three digits: 321, 327, 328, 329, 335, 336, 337, 338, 339, 341, 342, 346 and 347.

All toys collected will be distributed through the Toys For Tots program to provide a bright holiday for less fortunate children.

Forum to highlight marijuana pros, cons

The League of Women Voters will host a public forum on “Marijuana Matters?” at 8:45 a.m. Dec. 7 at the Hilton Garden Inn, at 12600 University Drive, Fort Myers.

Speakers will discuss the pros and cons of the controlled substance from many perspectives, including law enforcement, medical and recreational use, and abuse.

An amendment regarding the medical use of marijuana may be on the ballot in 2014.

The public is invited to attend.

Instructor June De Vincent will give a free demonstration of a different art medium on the third Wednesday of each month from noon to 2 p.m. at the Veterans Park Recreation Center, at 55 Homestead Road S.

Pool offers fall swim lessons, aerobics

The Lehigh Acres Community Pool, at 1400 W. Fifth St., is hosting fall swim lessons.

A range of skill levels are offered for all ages by American Red Cross-certified instructors.

Eight classes are $50.

Commit to get fit with aqua aerobics. Choose the fast-paced workout at 10:30 a.m. Tuesdays through Fridays, or the low-impact National Arthritis Foundation-sponsored class at 1:15 p.m. Tuesdays and Fridays.

Classes are in chest-deep water, 45 minutes in length and do not heavily impact joints.

There are lifeguards on-duty; lap swimmers are welcome.

Admission is $3 for adults, $2 for ages 17 and under, and $2 for seniors.

Pickin’ In The Park scheduled

Musicians come together to perform during Pickin’ In The Park from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursdays at the lodge by the lake at the rear of Veterans Park.

The public is welcome to join in playing or just enjoy the music. There is no charge.

Children’s Choir plans rehearsals

The Lehigh Children’s Choir rehearses from 6-7 p.m. Tuesdays at Cayuga Music Studio, at 1100 Homestead Road.

Calling all musicians

The Lehigh Concert Band has open spots for any concert band musician who can play at a high school or college level or above.

The season runs from November to April, and the band rehearses from 7 to 9 p.m. every Tuesday at Faith Lutheran Church, at 705 Leeland Blvd.

Performances are held as the full band or in small groups at least once a month at festivals, churches and retirement homes in Lehigh Acres and Southwest Florida.

Those interested in joining are invited to stop by a Tuesday rehearsal or any performance.
