G. Weaver Hipps begins Suitcases for Kids

G. Weaver Hipps Elementary has joined the Suitcases for Kids initiative, a nationwide project that aims to provide all foster children with suitcases that they may use to keep personal belongings in.

There are approximately 1,000 children in the foster care system in Lee County. Many will relocate as many as five to seven times during their childhood, often transporting their belongings in a trash bag.

Between Nov. 25 and Dec. 18, students and staff members at the school will collect small suitcases - carry-on or child size - toothpaste, deodorant, small stuffed animals and blankets.

All items must be new or in clean, gently used condition.

The school would like to collect 300 suitcases.

Students to compete for scholarship money

On Jan. 25, more than 700 students will participate in the Thomas Alva Edison Kiwanis Science and Engineering Fair and the Thomas A. Edison Inventors Fair.

Public school, private school and home-schooled students from Southwest Florida will be competing at the Harborside Convention Center for more than $900,000 in scholarships from local universities and colleges.

This is a signature event of the Edison Festival of Light, showcasing more than 400 extraordinary science fair projects and approximately 300 ingenious inventions.

The Inventors Fair will be open to the public from 1:30 to 4 p.m., and the Science and Engineering Fair open from 2 to 5 p.m.

EFOL Discovery Village on Edwards Drive and Centennial Park will run concurrent to the fairs. Discovery Village features interactive STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) exhibits that are free to the public.

LAMS?awards holiday basket to family

Lehigh Acres Middle School partners with several organizations during the holiday season to support families who could benefit from some holiday cheer.

The National Pan-Hellenic Council of Southwest Florida expanded its contributions to include 10 schools in the South and East Zones of Lee County, including Lehigh Acres Middle School.

LAMS Assistant Principal Mr. Forest Walker Jr. is an active member in the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, a contributing fraternity in the National Pan-Hellenic Council.

The administration at Lehigh Acres Middle School selected a family to be the happy recipients of the NPHC Thanksgiving Basket.
