Go to the Market, get insured

January 15, 2014

To the editor:

The ACA was passed to help avoid the crisis in our health care system. We have severe problems with escalating cost and coverage. More than 48 million of us are uninsured and many more have poor quality insurance.

We pay for coverage primarily through private insurance. Health insurance reform hopes to make insurance companies easier to work with. The Health Care Marketplace is available to allow purchasers to get information on products and compare before purchasing. This also creates competition between insurances for your business.

This is not socialized medicine. There is no government plan on the Marketplace. Insurances are from private companies. There is a large advantage in using the Marketplace to purchase your insurance. You can get an advanced premium tax credit and cost sharing reduction, if you are eligible. These will make your health insurance more affordable.

We also have problems with distribution of health care and with quality. These problems are addressed with health care reform. This also should be of great interest to all of us, but especially to the underserved population (rural, inner city urban, some minorities and the elderly.)
