Free monthly art demos

Instructor June De Vincent will give a free demonstration of a different art medium on the third Wednesday of each month from noon to 2 p.m. at the Veterans Park Recreation Center, at 55 Homestead Road S.

For ages 14 and older.

Edible Gardening Exchange to meet

The Lehigh Acres Edible Gardening Exchange will meet Jan. 16 at 7 p.m. at the Veterans Park Recreation Center.

The guest speaker is Monica Ozores-Hampton, of the Southwest Florida Research and Education Center in Immokalee. She will talk about heirloom tomatoes.

After the first meeting, the venue requires a $10 lifetime membership fee.

General Woman's Club to host silent auction

The General Woman's Club of Lehigh Acres will meet at 1 p.m. Jan. 17 at Faith Lutheran Church, at 705 Leeland Heights.

Bob Proctor Memorial Charity Event set

The American Legion Post 323 will host the Bob Proctor Memorial Charity Event on Jan. 18.

It will feature a family picnic with outdoor games, a bounce house for the children, live music, games and a bike show.

There will be silent auctions, as well as a featured raffle for one of three 32-inch televisions with built-in DVD player.

All proceeds will be split between the American Legion Legacy Scholarship and the American Legion Child Welfare Foundation.

Gulf Coast Writers to host guest speaker

The Gulf Coast Writers Association will meet Jan. 18 from 10 a.m. to noon at Zion Lutheran Church, at 7401 Winkler Road, Fort Myers.

The speaker is Mark Wayne Adam, vice president of communication for the Florida Authors and Publishers Association. He has illustrated more than 30 children's books in six years, winning numerous children's book awards.

The topic is "Is A Picture Worth A Thousand Words?" It will cover the importance of cover art, how to work with an illustrator including costs, rights needed for reproduction and an overview of services provided by illustrators.

Members and first-time visitors are free; guests are $5.

Lehigh Concert Band to perform concert

The Lehigh Concert Band will perform Jan. 19 at 3 p.m. at Faith Lutheran Church, at 705 Leeland Heights Blvd.

Hear favorite songs from the musicals "Sound of Music," "Fiddler on the Roof" and "South Pacific." The performance will also feature the Lehigh Brass Group playing a special arrangement of Wien Bleibt Wien.

The event is free of charge, though donations are accepted.

The Lehigh Concert Band has open spots for any concert band musician who can play at a high school or college level or above.

The season runs from November to April, and the band rehearses from 7 to 9 p.m. every Tuesday at Faith Lutheran Church, at 705 Leeland Blvd.

Those interested in joining are invited to stop by a Tuesday rehearsal or any performance.

Lehigh Children's Choir holding auditions

The Lehigh Children's Choir is holding auditions until Jan. 20.

The spring concert will be in late March, with additional performances from February through April.

Rehearsals are every Tuesday from 6 to 7 p.m. They include extensive ear training and theory.

Open call for artists, craftsmen and writers

The 3rd Annual Inland Arts & Music Festival will be held Feb. 1 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Barron Park in LaBelle.

Artists, photographers, sculptors, artisans, craftsmen and writers are invited to participate and sell at the outdoor event.

Food vendors will be on-site. Live music will be performed in the gazebo throughout the day and children will enjoy the wandering characters.

Admission is free.

A 10-by-10 space for Arts of the Inland members is $30; non-member rate is $60. Deadline for reserving vendor space is Jan. 24.

Vendor set-up begins at 7 a.m. and must be completed by 9 a.m. Tear down will be after 3 p.m.

Learn how to garden

Grow a Gardener, an eight-session program designed to educate all ages on edible gardening in Southwest Florida, will be held Mondays at 3:30 p.m. at the Veterans Park Recreation Center, at 55 S. Homestead Road.

Instructors are volunteer Lee County Master Gardeners trained by the University of Florida's Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences.

All graduates will receive a certificate of completion from Lee County University of Florida/IFAS.

The cost for all eight sessions is $20, paid to the instructor; the cost per workship is $2.50. A $10 lifetime membership fee to Veterans Park is also required.

The remaining workshops are:

- Jan. 27: The life of a seed and why to start from seed

- Feb. 3: Water needs of plants and Lee County water restrictions

- Feb. 10: Worm bins, fertilizers and Lee County fertilizer restrictions

- Feb. 24: Plant parts from root to seeds

- March 10: Plant propagation and making more plants from the ones you have

- March 17: Insects - do not kill the good guys

- March 24: What parts of the plant we can eat

LCDAS announces Microchip Clinics

Lee County Domestic Animal Services will host a series of clinics to encourage microchipping of pets to help increase the return of stray animals and protect owners if their pet is lost or stolen.

Microchip Clinics will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. on the first Friday of each month, with the exception of July. The dates are:

- Feb. 7

- March 7

- April 4

- May 2

- June 6

- Aug. 1

- Sept. 5

- Oct. 3

- Nov. 7

- Dec. 5.

Cost is $15 per pet; no appointment is necessary. Lee County pet-licensing fees are reduced if a pet is sterilized and microchipped.

Reservations requested to use Wedding Room

Valentine's Day is usually the busiest day at the Clerk of Court Recording Office for wedding nuptials. The ceremony fee is $30, plus $93.50 for the marriage license.

The Wedding Room is typically first-come, first-married. Reservations are encouraged.

Ceremonies can also be banyan tree, weather permitting.

Smart Start packages are available including photos, a keepsake certificate and online wedding announcements on the Web site.

The Recording Office is at 2115 Second St., Second Floor, Fort Myers. It is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Lehigh Acres Community Plan workshop planned

A Lehigh Acres Community Plan workshop will be held Feb. 15 from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the East County Regional Library, at 881 N. Gunnery Road.

The topic will be "Economic Transects and Employment Centers."

Miss SW Florida/Lee Co. Fair taking entries

Entry forms are now available for the 2014 Miss SW Florida/Lee Co. Fair pageant on March 1 at the Lee Civic Center.

The competition is open to infants through age 26.

Contestants will compete in a daytime outfit, as well as a gown fit for their age. There is no talent requirement for the competition.

Prize packages will include crowns and banners, photo opportunities, scholarships and $250 toward the state pageant.

Winners will represent the SW Florida/Lee County Fair.

LRMC offers insurance help for Marketplace

People needing assistance signing up for health insurance on the online Marketplace can call Lehigh Regional Medical Center's free helpline at (239) 368-4407.

A certified application counselor will help individuals navigate the insurance exchanges and selection process, enroll in the program and find a physician.

The deadline for enrollment is March 31.

Once coverage begins, individuals can schedule well visits with their new primary care physician, pediatrician, internal medicine specialist or family doctor.

Water fitness classes available at public pool

The Lehigh Acres Community Pool, at 1400 W. Fifth St., offers a variety of water fitness classes.

Commit to get fit with aqua aerobics. Choose the fast-paced workout at 10:30 a.m. Tuesdays through Fridays, or the free low-impact National Arthritis Foundation-sponsored class at 1:15 p.m. Tuesdays and Fridays.

Classes are in chest-deep water, 45 minutes in length and do not heavily impact joints.

Lifeguards are on duty; lap swimmers are welcome. The pool is closed Sunday and Monday.

Admission is $3 for adults, $2 for ages 17 and under, and $2 for seniors.

Pickin' In The Park scheduled weekly

Musicians come together to perform during Pickin' In The Park from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursdays at the lodge by the lake at the rear of Veterans Park.

The public is welcome to join in playing or just enjoy the music. There is no charge.

Lehigh Singers seek new members

The Lehigh Singers rehearse every Tuesday at 7:15 p.m. at the Cayuga Music Studio. Members are asked to attend every rehearsal until the concert in early April.
