Students to compete for scholarship money
On Jan. 25, more than 700 students will compete in the Thomas Alva Edison Kiwanis Science and Engineering Fair and Thomas A. Edison Inventors Fair for more than $900,000 in local scholarships.
At the Harborside Convention Center, the event showcases more than 400 science fair projects and about 300 inventions.
The Inventors Fair will be open to the public from 1:30 to 4 p.m., and the Science and Engineering Fair is open from 2 to 5 p.m.
EFOL Discovery Village on Edwards Drive and Centennial Park runs concurrent to the fairs. It features interactive STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) exhibits that are free to the public.
House subcommittees support name change for Edison State
On Jan. 8, the Higher Education and Workforce Subcommittee in the Florida House of Representatives approved HB 137 to rename Edison State College to Florida Southwestern State College.
The bills will receive a final vote in the Florida Senate and House during the spring legislative session.
