Child Care of SW Florida earns certification

The Community Children’s Center in Lehigh Acres, one of six Child Care of Southwest Florida centers in Lee and Hendry counties, has earned Safe Sleep certification.

Through training developed by Healthy Child Care America, a program of the American Academy of Pediatrics, 16 staff members learned to help reduce the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome for infants in their care, identify behaviors that increase the risk of SIDS and explain common beliefs and misconceptions about SIDS.

All staff members were required to achieve perfect scores on tests to achieve certification.

Appreciation Day, Community Expo set

Florida Lung & Sleep Associates is celebrating the beginning of its 12th year anniversary in Lehigh Acres in conjunction with its “Annual Appreciation Day.”

It will also host a community expo on Feb. 1 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 2625 Lee Blvd. as a way of giving back to the community.

Florida Lung & Sleep Associates is accepting vendor applications for the expo. All proceeds benefit The Chest Institute.

LCDAS receives national award

Lee County Domestic Animal Services was one of five animal shelters selected nationwide to receive the “Future Five” Shelter Partners to Save Cats’ Lives Award from Alley Cat Allies.

The program was designed to develop five model animal shelters to improve live-release rates for felines through trap, neuter and return (TNR) programs, foster networks and spay/neuter resources.

Each shelter was given $5,000 for the efforts and also one year of guidance from Alley Cat Allies to reach full program potential.

Airport fire station acquires certification

The Aircraft Rescue & Fire Station at Southwest Florida International Airport has earned the Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design Gold Certification by the U.S. Green Building Council and Green Building Certification Institute.

The station opened in June and is one of a few projects in Lee County to achieve the LEED designation and the first public/government building to receive the Gold-level rating for sustainable design and construction.

Key features that helped the 31,000-square-foot station earn the certification are energy-efficient lighting and mechanical systems; low-flow water fixtures; a rain water reclamation system for collection and storage of water to be used for landscaping irrigation; recycling and separating of construction debris and waste; and the use of reflective building materials and allowance of natural light into the building.

LEED certification is awarded by the U.S. Green Building Council and the Green Building Certification Institute to buildings that are designed to lower costs, reduce waste, conserve energy and water, be healthier and reduce harmful emissions.

The LEED Green Building Certification system is the foremost program for the design, construction, maintenance and operations of green buildings.
