‘Wing of Freedom Tour’ to arrive in Fort Myers

The Collings Foundation’s “Wings of Freedom Tour” will be at Page Field in Fort?Myers from Jan. 31 through Feb. 2.

Tour or take a flight in a Boeing B-17G Flying Fortress “Nine-O-Nine” heavy bomber, consolidated B-24J Liberator “Witchcraft” heavy bomber and North American dual control P-51C Mustang “Betty Jane” fighter.

Walkthrough tours are available for a donation of $12 for adults and $6 for children under 12; World War II vets are free.

Tours and display hours are 2 to 4 p.m. Jan. 31, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Feb. 1 and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Feb. 2.

Flight experiences are normally scheduled before and after the tour times. Flight costs for the B-17 and B-24 are $450 per person for a 30-minute flight; P-51 flights are $2,200 for a 30-minute flight and $3,200 for a full hour.

Flight experiences are a tax-deductible donation.

The Boy Scouts will perform the flag presentation, and LaBelle Mayor Dave Lyons will open the festival.

Entertainment will include The Firehouse Singers, The Shock Sisters, fiddle/dulcimer player Joyce Waltman and more.

Training available to tutor adults in English

The Lehigh Literacy Council will hold tutor training on Feb. 1 from 9 a.m. to noon at the Lehigh Community Services, at 201 Plaza Drive.

Participants will be trained to tutor adults in English. Teaching experience is not required.

The students are from many foreign countries. Tutors will not need to know their language.

The pageant will be held in conjunction with the fair. It is open to all ages, and it is an official preliminary pageant to the Miss Florida American Beauty system.

Contestants will wear two outfits and will be judged on poise, grace and self-confidence. No experience is necessary.

There will be a free workshop and meeting for those interested in the pageant on Feb. 1 at 4 p.m. at Envy Models and Talent, at 8695 College Parkway, Fort Myers.

Learn how to garden

Grow a Gardener, an eight-session program designed to educate all ages on edible gardening in Southwest Florida, will be held Mondays at 3:30 p.m. at the Veterans Park Recreation Center, at 55 S. Homestead Road.

Instructors are volunteer Lee County Master Gardeners trained by the University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences.

All graduates will receive a certificate of completion from Lee County University of Florida/IFAS.

The cost per workship is $2.50, paid to the instructor. A $10 lifetime membership fee to Veterans Park is also required.

The remaining workshops are:

– Feb. 3: Water needs of plants and Lee County water restrictions

– Feb. 10: Worm bins, fertilizers and Lee County fertilizer restrictions

– Feb. 24: Plant parts from root to seeds

– March 10: Plant propagation and making more plants from the ones you have

LCDAS announces Microchip Clinics

Lee County Domestic Animal Services will host a series of clinics to encourage microchipping of pets to help increase the return of stray animals and protect owners if their pet is lost or stolen.

Microchip Clinics will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. on the first Friday of each month, with the exception of July. The dates are:

– May 2

– June 6

– Aug. 1

– Sept. 5

If you know of someone who is an exemplary civic-minded citizen, you can nominate them for the 2013 Paulette Burton Citizen of the Year Award.

The Lee County Board of County Commissioners is looking for the kind of people who get involved in the community and work diligently for causes in which they believe.

The award strives to recognize a citizen who has provided outstanding civic contributions to the Lee County government.

The selection criteria includes a positive attitude, knowledge of the objectives and activities of the Lee County government, a demonstrated interest in community/county government partnerships and promotion of harmony between the community and government.

Lee County commissioners will select the winner.

The deadline for enrollment is March 31.

The Lehigh Acres Community Pool, at 1400 W. Fifth St., offers a variety of water fitness classes.

Commit to get fit with aqua aerobics. Choose the fast-paced workout at 10:30 a.m. Tuesdays through Fridays, or the free low-impact National Arthritis Foundation-sponsored class at 1:15 p.m. Tuesdays and Fridays.

Classes are in chest-deep water, 45 minutes in length and do not heavily impact joints.

Lifeguards are on duty; lap swimmers are welcome. The pool is closed Sunday and Monday.

LCDAS announces Microchip Clinics

Lee County Domestic Animal Services will host a series of clinics to encourage microchipping of pets to help increase the return of stray animals and protect owners if their pet is lost or stolen.

Microchip Clinics will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. on the first Friday of each month, with the exception of July. The dates are:

If you know of someone who is an exemplary civic-minded citizen, you can nominate them for the 2013 Paulette Burton Citizen of the Year Award.

The Lee County Board of County Commissioners is looking for the kind of people who get involved in the community and work diligently for causes in which they believe.

The award strives to recognize a citizen who has provided outstanding civic contributions to the Lee County government.

The selection criteria includes a positive attitude, knowledge of the objectives and activities of the Lee County government, a demonstrated interest in community/county government partnerships and promotion of harmony between the community and government.

‘Wing of Freedom Tour’ to arrive in Fort Myers

The Collings Foundation’s “Wings of Freedom Tour” will be at Page Field in Fort?Myers from Jan. 31 through Feb. 2.

Tour or take a flight in a Boeing B-17G Flying Fortress “Nine-O-Nine” heavy bomber, consolidated B-24J Liberator “Witchcraft” heavy bomber and North American dual control P-51C Mustang “Betty Jane” fighter.

Walkthrough tours are available for a donation of $12 for adults and $6 for children under 12; World War II vets are free.

Tours and display hours are 2 to 4 p.m. Jan. 31, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Feb. 1 and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Feb. 2.

Training available to tutor adults in English
