LAMS teacher named 'Teacher of the Year'

Carol Anderson, teacher and chairperson of the Science Department at Lehigh Acres Middle School, was selected as "Teacher of the Year" for 2012-13 by the Greater Lehigh Acres Chamber of Commerce.

Anderson was honored, along with others, at the chamber's 2014 Awards Gala and dinner held Jan. 25 at the Pelican Preserve.

Riverdale High students earn business awards

Eight Riverdale High School students earned Business Achievement Awards from Future Business Leaders of America.

They had to complete a set of tasks demonstrating their commitment in service, education and progress.

Alexandria Amott, recent graduate, received the America pin, the highest achievement awarded.

Senior Iman Zekri earned the "Business" award and previously earned the "Future" award.

Earning the "Future" pin were seniors Stephon Smith, Alexis Sylvia, Shay Thomas and Tana Ziegler. Juniors awarded were Savannah Chrisenberry, Emerson Ingram nd Christopher Kopko.

Student Assignment orientation sessions set

The Lee County School District will host six Student Assignment orientation sessions.

Topics will cover the evolution of the program, common misconceptions about attendance zones and the lottery process.

Student Assignment representatives will be onsite to assist parents with questions about the process.

Computers will also be available to complete applications.

Orientation sessions will be held at the following locations:

- Lehigh Senior High School, at 901 Gunnery Road: Feb. 6 at 6 p.m. in the auditorium

- Lehigh Senior High School, at 901 Gunnery Road: Feb. 7 at 7:30 a.m. in the auditorium

Nominations to open for Kohl's scholarships

Kohl's Department Stores will take nominations for outstanding volunteers for the 2014 Kohl's Cares Scholarship Program.

Nominations for children ages 6-18 will be taken through March 14 at: kohlskids.com, and nominators must be 21 years or older.

Kohl's will award nearly $400,000 in scholarships and prizes to more than 2,300 youths for making a positive impact on their communities.

Circles of Care early childhood education conference scheduled

Child Care of Southwest Florida invites early childhood educators and caregivers to Circles of Care, a conference designed to inform and inspire those who work with children from infancy to elementary.

The 19th annual conference will be held April 12 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. at Edison State College in Fort Myers.

Presentations, age-specific workshops, hands-on experiences and exhibits will provide information and resources to teachers, administrators, paraprofessionals, family-care providers and parents.

Keynote speaker Ron Mohl will share teaching methods with STEAM (science, technology, engineering, the arts and math).

Up to .65 continuing education credits will be available.

Advance cost is $40 per person; admission at the door is $55.
