During the night of Feb. 4, two pit bulls were abandoned outside of Lee County Domestic Animal Services shelter.

LCDAS is seeking information regarding the owner of the two dogs who were extremely emaciated and covered with wounds and scars. One was too weak to stand.

According to video cameras, one female and one male dog were abandoned at 4:15 a.m. The cameras captured the image of what appeared to be a black man, approximately 5 feet 10 inches tall, possibly wearing an Atlanta Braves baseball cap, leave the canines and drive off.

An employee discovered the dogs at about 6:30 a.m.

An examination by Animal Services' veterinarian confirmed the condition of the dogs.

"The male is about 25 pounds underweight and the pressure sores and caked feces on his body would indicate that he has been laying in this condition for days to weeks," said Nicole Ferguson. "The female is about 20 pounds underweight and possibly pregnant."

Both dogs tested positive for heartworms.

A good foster home or adopter may be needed for the dogs to get the care they require to recover.

Animal Services has initiated an investigation into the abandonment under state statute 828.13(3) which states, "Any person ... who abandons ... any animal in a street, road or public place without providing for the care, sustenance, protection, and shelter of such animal is guilty of a misdemeanor of the first degree."

If found guilty, the offense is punishable by a fine of not more than $5,000 and/or imprisonment.

Anyone who recognizes the dogs or has information regarding their owner is asked to call Animal Services at (239) 533-7387, ext. 2, or contact Southwest Florida Crime Stoppers at (800) 780-TIPS.

Lee County Domestic Animal Services accepts anonymous complaints and information.
