Gun recovered at middle school
Students at Alva Middle School did the right thing on March 6.
While a bus was traveling to Alva Middle School, students reported seeing another student displaying a handgun. Without delay, the incident was reported to the school resource officer.
Deputies immediately located the student who was in possession of the handgun while on the bus. He and another student were questioned about the incident.
Due to the nature of the incident, Youth Services detectives responded and assumed the investigation.
Detectives learned that both students had possessed the gun while on the school bus. One of the students then deposited the gun into the garbage can in the boy’s restroom.
The gun was a 9mm semi-automatic handgun and was not loaded.
Both students – Demetrius Royce Brown, 14, of 1243 Raccoon St., and Miguel Danyel Marquez, 13, of 2415 S. Paul Ave. – were arrested for possession of a firearm on school grounds.
The investigation is ongoing and further charges may be forthcoming.
