Schools mark Read Across America Day

The Cat in the Hat was back for the annual reading motivation and awareness program that called for every child in every community to celebrate reading on the birthday of the children's author Dr. Seuss.

School district hosts Annual Spelling Bee

The School District of Lee County's 17th Annual Spelling Bee was held March 6 at Three Oaks Middle School in Fort Myers.

Forty-six students from 23 middle schools participated.

The winner received a trophy, a U.S. Savings Bond and a trip to Washington D.C. to compete in the Scripps National Spelling Bee.

Nominations open for Kohl's scholarships

Kohl's Department Stores will take nominations for outstanding volunteers for the 2014 Kohl's Cares Scholarship Program.

Nominations for ages 6-18 will be taken online at: kohlskids.com through March 14; nominators must be at least 21 years old.

Kohl's will award nearly $400,000 in scholarships and prizes to youths for making a positive impact on their communities.

Circles of Care early childhood education conference scheduled

Child Care of Southwest Florida invites early childhood educators and caregivers to Circles of Care, a conference designed to inform and inspire those who work with children from infancy to elementary.

The 19th annual conference will be held April 12 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. at Edison State College in Fort Myers.

Presentations, age-specific workshops, hands-on experiences and exhibits will provide information and resources to teachers, administrators, paraprofessionals, family-care providers and parents.

Keynote speaker Ron Mohl will share teaching methods with STEAM (science, technology, engineering, the arts and math).

Up to .65 continuing education credits will be available.

Advance cost is $40 per person; admission at the door is $55.

General Woman's Club to award scholarships

The General Woman's Club of Lehigh Acres will award $500 scholarships to single parents with minor children living at home.

The applicant must be enrolled in continuing education classes at an accredited college, university or technical school, and they must be a resident of Lehigh Acres.

There is no pre-printed application form; mail the following to Mrs. Diane A. Lashua, Scholarship Chairman, 123 Sebring Circle, Lehigh Acres, FL 33936:

- Send proof of Lehigh Acres residence, like a utility bill or rent receipt

- Supply street address and contact telephone number (P.O Boxes will be not accepted)

- Name of college, university or technical school enrolled in

- Brief biography that includes area of study

Deadline to apply is April 20.

Awards will be issued May 16.
