Edward Theodore Welk, 95, of Waco, Texas, and formerly of Westminster, Md., and Lehigh Acres, died Saturday, March 8, 2014. He was born Feb. 16, 1919, to Harry and Florence Welk.
He married Ruth Catherine Dell on July 5, 1941; they were married for 71 years before she died Nov. 10, 2012.
He grew up near Taneytown, Md.
He served in the U.S. Navy in World War II.
He worked for Glenn L. Martin Co. (now Lockheed-Martin) near Baltimore for 28 years and then the water department in Westminster, always farming on the side.
He was a member of St. Benjamin's Lutheran Church in Westminster.
After retiring to Florida, he was an active member of Faith Lutheran Church in Lehigh, helping establish the Memorial Rose Garden and building of the bell tower.
He volunteered at the local hospital and Master Gardeners Club.
He is survived by daughters, Janet (Donald) Holland of Waco, Texas, Sharon Welk of Melbourne, Fla., Sonja (Eddie) Johnson of Westover, Md., Barbara (George) Short of Henderson, Md., and Kathy Welk of Coatesville, Pa.; 11 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Helen Carr of Westminster, Wilda Dell of Taneytown, Md., and Naomi Welk of Frizzellburg, Md.; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousin.
Memorial services will be held at a later date when he and his wife's ashes will be placed in the Memorial Rose Garden at Faith Lutheran Church in Lehigh Acres.
