As the number two reason for doctor visits, back pain is one of the most common and agonizing afflictions we can experience. Lee Memorial Health System's new Spine Center offers one-stop access to comprehensive care; giving patients the opportunity to be examined, diagnosed, and begin their personalized treatment plan all in the same day and under one roof. Offered as an alternative to hard to fill pain prescriptions, injection based treatment options provide effective relief that also helps many patients avoid surgery.
The Spine Center uses injection therapy rather than pill based pain management since the goal is to treat the cause of pain rather than manage symptoms with medication.
"Many patients are unaware of treatments available outside of medication," explains Dr. Gene Mahaney. "We walk them through each option, and even though some are fearful of injections, usually after the first one they're no longer apprehensive, especially once it brings them relief."
The Spine Center specializes in physical medicine, rehabilitation and pain management; resolving pain issues through nonsurgical and minimally invasive treatments, including physical therapy, spinal injections, and medication. Streamlined referral to a surgical medical practice is available when necessary, but is considered a last resort. The Spine Center also treats musculoskeletal issues, such as shoulder, hip and knee pain.
A heavy emphasis on education helps patients stay healthy after leaving the program. Living with chronic pain can cause fatigue, irritability, stress, and withdrawal from physical and social activities.
The spa-like atmosphere and concierge-type service at the Spine Center helps patients focus on recovery and gets them back to their lives as soon as possible. The Spine Center is conveniently located at 8960 Colonial Center Dr., Fort Myers.
