Parkinson's focus of community event

A Hope Parkinson Program Community Education event will be held on April 11 from 2 to 3:30 p.m. in the U-Building at the Edison State College, at 8099 College Parkway, Fort Myers.

The program will feature Patricia Radford, associate director of advancement for The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research. She will present the latest research for the foundation.

A question-and-answer period will follow the presentation.

Health care professionals, therapists, volunteers, caregivers and those living with Parkinson's disease encouraged to attend.

The event is free.

Lehigh Concert Band to perform concert

The Lehigh Concert Band will perform on April 13 at 3 p.m. at the Faith Lutheran Church, at 705 Leeland Heights Blvd.

The concert will feature Beethoven's "Egmont Overture," Sousa's "King Cotton March," "Beguine Festival," "When the Saints go Marching In" and more, as well as pieces like a medley of Andrew Lloyd Weber's hits.

The performance will also feature a small group performance.

The show is free of charge, though donations are accepted.

The Lehigh Concert Band has open spots for any concert band musician who can play at a high school or college level or above.

Clarinet and tuba players are particularly needed.

The season runs from November to April, and the band rehearses at 7 p.m. every Tuesday at the Faith Lutheran Church, at 705 Leeland Blvd.

Those interested in joining are invited to stop by a Tuesday rehearsal or any performance.

Free tax preparation help is available

The United Way is sponsoring free tax assistance on Wednesdays and Fridays from 5 to 8 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to noon at 201 Plaza Drive, Suite 103.

If your household income was less than $57,000 last year, trained IRS volunteers will help you file your taxes.

You must bring your photo ID, Social Security card and birth dates, wage and earning forms, interest and dividend forms, bank routing and account numbers, and the total you may have paid for day care.

Edible Gardening Exchange to meet

The Lehigh Acres Edible Gardening Exchange will meet April 17 at 7 p.m. at the Veterans Park Recreation Center, at 55 S. Homestead Road.

Dr. Mongi Zekri, with the University of Florida/IFAS, will speak about citrus insects and diseases. He travels the globe assisting with citrus diagnosis and developing solutions.

After the first meeting, the venue requires a $10 lifetime membership fee.

General Woman's Club planning memorial

The General Woman's Club of Lehigh Acres will meet at 1 p.m. April 18 at Faith Lutheran Church, at 705 Leeland Heights.

Poets to speak before Gulf Coast Writers

The Gulf Coast Writers Association will meet April 19 from 10 a.m. to noon at Zion Lutheran Church, at 7401 Winkler Road, Fort Myers.

A panel of local poets - Jim Gustafson, Carol Drummond, Gary McLouth, Joe Pacheco and Larry Stiles - will speak about "The Four Temperaments of Poetry," including story, structure, music and imagination.

Chamber to host Shredder Day

The Greater Lehigh Acres Chamber of Commerce will host the 2nd Annual Shredder Day on April 26 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Florida Lung and Sleep Associates, at 2625 Lee Blvd.

Residents are encouraged to recycle, reduce, replenish, restore and reuse to lessen the community impact in honor of Earth Day.

Services will include the disposal of old papers for $5 per file box, including a certificate of destruction, and the Lee County Sheriff's Office will accept old medications for proper disposal. The Lehigh Acres Kiwanis Club will accept donations of clothing and shoes.

In addition, information about energy saving, preserving water and how to properly recycle on a daily basis will be provided by different agencies.

Pioneer club to hold annual picnic

Lee County Pioneer Club will hold its 65th annual Pioneer Picnic on April 26 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Tinsley Pavilion at the Lee County Civic Center, at 11831 Bayshore Road, North Fort Myers.

Meal tickets are $10, but attendees are not required to eat.

There is an eligibility requirement for membership: Must have been a resident prior to 1964.

LCDAS announces Microchip Clinics

Lee County Domestic Animal Services will host a series of clinics to encourage microchipping of pets to help increase the return of stray animals and protect owners if their pet is lost or stolen.

Microchip Clinics will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. on the first Friday of each month, with the exception of July. The dates are:

- May 2

- June 6

- Aug. 1

- Sept. 5

- Oct. 3

- Nov. 7

- Dec. 5.

Cost is $15 per pet; no appointment is necessary. Lee County pet-licensing fees are reduced if a pet is sterilized and microchipped.

Sign up early for Lee County summer camps

Registration has started for the Lee County Parks & Recreation 2014 summer camps.

The camps draw thousands of youth throughout the region to programs, outings and activities at the department's traditional camps, teen camps and specialty camps.

The camps run nine weeks, from June 9 through Aug. 8.

If you plan to register at Wa-Ke Hatchee, Estero, North Fort Myers or Veterans Park, you need to obtain a facility membership first.

People who register at least two weeks before the first day of their session will receive an early registration discount. For example, the price of a traditional camp would be $70 instead of $75.

This year, outdoor specialty camps will cost $75, except for Boca Grande, which is $100.

Swimming lessons and other summer aquatics programs began enrollment on April 1.

LeeTran is offering a youth GO Pass to full-time students 18 or younger for $35.

The pass is good for unlimited travel on LeeTran buses and trolleys for the entire summer recess.

Water fitness classes available at public pool

The Lehigh Acres Community Pool, at 1400 W. Fifth St., offers a variety of water fitness classes.

Commit to get fit with aqua aerobics. Choose the fast-paced workout at 10:30 a.m. Tuesdays through Fridays, or the free low-impact National Arthritis Foundation-sponsored class at 1:15 p.m. Tuesdays and Fridays.

Classes are in chest-deep water, 45 minutes in length and do not heavily impact joints.

Lifeguards are on duty; lap swimmers are welcome. The pool is closed Sunday and Monday.

Admission is $3 for adults, $2 for ages 17 and under, and $2 for seniors.

Pickin' In The Park scheduled each week

Musicians come together to perform during Pickin' In The Park from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursdays at the lodge by the lake at the rear of Veterans Park.

The public is welcome to join in playing or just enjoy the music. There is no charge.
