District to benefit from grant funds received
The Teachers Association of Lee County has been named the recipient of a grant from the National Educators Association that will provide funds for costs associated with implementing the Florida Standards for College and Career Readiness in the School District of Lee County.
The NEA awarded a $25,000 grant to TALC, which TALC will use to: provide funding for substitute teachers for 1.5 days while professional development leaders at schools attend instructional coaches' training, purchase books for professional development leaders related to teaching the standards and buy instructional materials that will support the implementation.
ABWA offers scholarship for female students
The Sanibel-Captiva Charter Chapter of American Business Women's Association is sponsoring a $1,500 Outright Grant scholarship for 2014-15 through the Stephen Bufton Memorial Education Fund.
The Outright Grant Program offers junior level or higher college students a scholarship that helps to offset costs associated with college tuition, books and fees.
The amount awarded for each Outright Grant is $1,500.
Outright Grant scholarships awarded are non-renewable. Applicants may receive only one Outright Grant each award year.
Applicants can be ABWA members or nonmembers; they must be a female U.S. citizen and have completed a minimum of 60 credit hours.
The applicant must have achieved a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better on a 4.0 scale.
The applicant must be seeking a baccalaureate degree or higher and must be attending an institution authorized to confer degrees at the baccalaureate level or higher in the United States.
Applications must be submitted in good order to be considered by May 10.
District announces upcoming programs
The Lee County School District announced that many schools are showcasing their students' talent with various spring programs.
The following is a list of upcoming musicals, plays and concerts:
- May 12: "Fairytales Gone Wrong" at Veterans Park Academy for the Arts at 6 p.m.
- May 16: Prism Concert at Lehigh Senior High at 7 p.m.
- May 19: "Bye Bye Birdie" musical at Veterans Park Academy for the Arts at 6:30 p.m.
- May 23: Veterans Park Academy for the Arts' Spring Dance Show at Lehigh Senior High at 6:30 p.m.

Sun Life Rising Star Awards grants available
Sun Life Financial is requesting applications for the Sun Life Rising Star Awards grants from area nonprofit organizations that promote the academic achievement of under-served youth.
Applications are available at: sunliferisingstar.com. The deadline for submissions is June 9.
Sun Life will award four winning organizations with $50,000 grants, and in turn, each nonprofit will nominate an exemplary student to receive a $5,000 Sun Life Rising Star scholarship towards financing a college education.
Organizations must have 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status, promote skills that directly translate to educational success in high school to students under 21, and collaborate with a secondary or post-secondary educational institution.
Student nominees must be high school seniors actively involved in an organization that shares the awards' mission. They must also plan to pursue post-secondary education, exhibit leadership qualities and demonstrate a strong commitment to their communities.
Nominated students are required to submit a 750-word essay.
