Presentation on summer crops
A free presentation on summer crops will be held May 31 from 2 to 4 p.m. at the East County Regional Library, at 881 N. Gunnery Road.
The guest speaker is Karen Harty, a UF/IFAS Lee County Extension Agriculture Program coordinator and master gardener.
She will introduce plants that grow well during the hot and humid summers.

LCDAS announces Microchip Clinics
Lee County Domestic Animal Services will host a series of clinics to encourage microchipping of pets to help increase the return of stray animals and protect owners if their pet is lost or stolen.
Microchip Clinics will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. on the first Friday of each month, with the exception of July. The dates are:
- June 6
- Aug. 1
- Sept. 5
- Oct. 3
- Nov. 7
- Dec. 5.
Cost is $15 per pet; no appointment is necessary. Lee County pet-licensing fees are reduced if a pet is sterilized and microchipped.
An additional special clinic will be held June 1 from noon to 2 p.m. at the Lee County Domestic Animal Services, at 5600 Banner Drive, Fort Myers.
No appointment is necessary.

Sign up early for summer camps
Registration has started for the Lee County Parks & Recreation 2014 summer camps.
The camps draw thousands of youth throughout the region to programs, outings and activities at the department's traditional camps, teen camps and specialty camps.
The camps run nine weeks, from June 9 through Aug. 8.
If you plan to register at Wa-Ke Hatchee, Estero, North Fort Myers or Veterans Park, you need to obtain a facility membership first.
People who register at least two weeks before the first day of their session will receive an early registration discount. For example, the price of a traditional camp would be $70 instead of $75.
This year, outdoor specialty camps will cost $75, except for Boca Grande, which is $100.
Swimming lessons and other summer aquatics programs began enrollment on April 1.
LeeTran is offering a youth GO Pass to full-time students 18 or younger for $35.
The pass is good for unlimited travel on LeeTran buses and trolleys for the entire summer recess.

Second annual playwriting contest
The Firehouse Community Theatre in LaBelle presents the Second Annual Clarence "Bud" Jones Playwriting Competition.
The competition welcomes full-length, previously unpublished plays, written by authors with a Southwest Florida connection.
A fee of $25 must accompany the manuscript, which may be submitted electronically or by mail and received prior to Aug. 1.
The blinded scripts will then be reviewed by a panel of judges including community members from education, library, publishing, and theatrical backgrounds.
Cash awards for authors of first, second and third place winners include $500, $200 and $100.
The theater will produce a scripted reading of the first place entrant during 2014-15 season.

The planning for the Annual Lehigh Makes A Difference Day 2014 is in full swing and organizers are calling on residents, civic groups and businesses to take part.

Pool offers swim lessons, aqua aerobics
The Lehigh Acres Community Pool, at 1400 W. Fifth St., is heated and open to the public year round. There are summer swim lessons offered in June and July, with a wide range of skill levels taught by American Red Cross certified instructors. Classes available for ages 6 months and older; cost is $50 for eight classes.
Prepare for the beach with aqua aerobics. Choose from an invigorating fast paced workout offered at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday through Friday or the ultra-low impact National Arthritis Foundation sponsored class at 1:15 p.m. Tuesday and Friday. Classes are in chest deep water and 45 minutes in length. There are always lifeguards-on-duty. Lap swimmers welcome.

Farmer's Market now open to the public
The Fenway South Farmer's Market will be held every Monday from 2 to 6 p.m. at JetBlue Park at Fenway South, at 11500 Fenway South Drive, Fort Myers.

Lehigh Concert Band in session for season
The Lehigh Concert Band has open spots for any concert band musician who can play at a high school or college level or above.
Clarinet and tuba players are particularly needed.
The season runs from November to April, and the band rehearses at 7 p.m. every Tuesday at the Faith Lutheran Church, at 705 Leeland Blvd.
