June programs released for Lee County library branch

June's roster of activities at East County Regional Library offers topics for all ages. The following activities are free to the public:

Adults

- Book Discussion: The Round House by Louise Erdrich

3:30 p.m. June 2

Set on the Ojibwe reservation in North Dakota, this novel tells the story of a boy coming of age as he seeks justice and understanding in the wake of a brutal, racially motivated attack on his family. The location of the attack, the round house, is a sacred area where the neighboring Caucasians cannot be prosecuted.

- Chess Anyone?

4 p.m. June 2, 9, 16, 23 and 30

Rise to the chess challenge and join the fun. Chess enthusiasts of all ages are welcome. Bring your own chess set or use one of ours. This program is provided by the Friends of the East County Regional Library.

- English Cafe

6 p.m. June 2, 9, 16 and 23

10 a.m. June 6, 13, 20 and 27

Practice your English with English Cafe, a free, conversation session for adult ESOL and ESL students. Each 90-minute session provides adult learners an opportunity to practice speaking English with native speakers. Participants may start at any time. Advanced registration is not necessary.

- Porcelain Painting

6 p.m. June 4

Join award-winning local artist Donna to learn about the art of porcelain painting. This art form has roots in ancient China and is still alive today. Donna will speak on the techniques and products porcelain painters use, do a live demonstration and give attendees the opportunity to try the art themselves during class. All materials will be supplied. Registration is requested.

- Knitting Nook

5 p.m. June 11 and 25

Join this fun, casual group of knitters and crocheters who get together to share project and technique ideas. Please note that this group is not facilitated by a professional knitting instructor and it is intended for group members to learn from each other. Some materials will be provided for newcomers, or bring a project to work on. Sponsored by the Friends of the East County Regional Library.

- Chair Yoga

1:30 p.m. June 7

Join local registered Yoga instructor Janelle as she teaches the basics of yoga from the comfort of a chair. This gentle introduction to yoga is suitable for all ages and experience levels. Registration is required.

- Mask Artistry

6 p.m. June 25

The use of masks for creative, decorative and practical purposes has a long-standing tradition around the globe. Join local artist Kim as she shares the secrets and history of various types of masks and then try your hand at creating a mask in the well-known Venetian style. All materials will be supplied. Space is limited. Registration is required.

- Meet the Author: Hilary Lemonius

3 p.m. June 28

Join author and local CNA and M.A., Hilary as she shares her 2011 book A Caregiver's Diary. Learn how acts of courage, kindness and empathy can ease the sufferings of an individual with a long-term or terminal illness and their loved ones, sometimes better than any medication could. Hilary will relate her experiences as a caregiver over her 20+ year career. Learn about different kinds of care giving available for different individual needs and learn techniques to use kindness to help those in need in your life.

- Baby-Parent Rhyme Time

10:30 a.m. June 16

Be prepared to tickle, jump and fly with your baby. These rhymes and songs are for infants, up to 24 months, accompanied by an adult. This 20-minute program is filled with songs designed to introduce rhyming and movement to infants.

- Family Storytime

10 a.m. Thursdays, June 19, 26

This program is for the whole family and lasts about 30 minutes.

- Kids Read Down Fines

3-4 p.m. June 21

4:30-5:30 p.m. June 25

Children and teens can earn a $2 coupon for every 15 minutes of reading, during the allotted time. A total of $8 per day may be earned. For ages 18 and younger. Coupons may be applied to cards issued to patrons age 18 and under only. Bring your library card with you. Your library card or library card number is required in order to access your account.

Teens

- East County Anime Club

Join a group of teens with an interest in Anime, Manga and other aspects of Japanese culture. Registration is not required but program is limited to 25 participants.
