District to take public input
The School District of Lee County requests the input of community members and parents as the district begins the process of writing a new strategic plan.
Roundtable conversations will provide the opportunity for individuals to provide thoughts and ideas about their public school system with trained facilitators.
Local community forums include:
- June 12: Veterans Park Academy for the Arts, at 49 S. Homestead Road, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Dinner will be served.
Sun Life grants available
Sun Life Financial is taking applications for the Sun Life Rising Star Awards grants from nonprofits that promote the academic achievement of under-served youth.
Applications are at: sunliferisingstar.com. The deadline for submissions is June 9.
Sun Life will award four organizations with $50,000 grants, and in turn, each nonprofit will nominate an exemplary student to receive a $5,000 Sun Life Rising Star scholarship towards financing a college education.
Organizations must have 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status, promote skills that translate to educational success in high school to students under 21, and collaborate with a secondary or post-secondary educational institution.
Student nominees must be high school seniors actively involved in an organization that shares the awards' mission. They must also plan to pursue post-secondary education, exhibit leadership qualities and demonstrate a strong commitment to their communities.
Students must submit a 750-word essay.
