At The Top sees splash of color as a new trend for men, women

Hair coloring has always been something that a lot of women have done for various reasons - to make themselves look younger, to feel better about one's self, to change to a color completely different than what one has.

But today, these are not the only reasons for hair coloring - or a dash of color to one's hair, for both women and some men.

Having a blotch if blond color has always been acceptable, but today there is an increasing number of women who want their hair colored to bright and different colors - like green, pink, or any other color one can dream up. Television and entertainers - both singers and actors - have had a great influence on the color of hair and/or a big splash of color "just for the fun of it."

Chris Cortez, who owns At The Top Salon at 1140 Lee Blvd., says it is no different in Lehigh and she is seeing more and more people come in to have their hair colored or to become trendy and have just a "splash" of hair colored.

"Just a few weeks ago, we had a very pretty 80-year-old woman who came into our shop and got a splash of pink in her hair and it looked good. She was happy with it and her friends will think she's gotten a little bit younger," Cortez says.

Her At The Top Salon began business in Lehigh in 1995, long before there so many hair salons in the community. In 1999 Cortez said she started working for At The Top Salon and she has been there now for 14 years.

Only thing, now she owns At The Top Salon and recently celebrated with her employees and friends with a gala afternoon.

Just a few months ago, Cortez said she took over the shop and moved it to its present site in the same shopping complex, but in Suite 103.

"We saved our jobs and those of our employees," she said proudly.

The employees include Kristen Mahler, a stylist and colorist; Brooke Binkley, a stylist and colorist, Christal Paccilla, a nail specialist and of course Chris Cortez, its owner, who is also a stylist and colorist. She said all at the salon are certified in Keratin treatments which means the hair will be more manageable and easy to style, and will be resistant to humidity. It will feel noticeably softer and silkier, with added life, shine and vibrancy.

"And of our stylists are experts in highlighting cuts, color, waxing, manicures, pedicures and gel use.

At The Top is a friendly place to go and have one's hair cut and fashion. It also has its clientele of men who come to have their hair cut, too.

And if a guy wants a splash of color, all his has to do is ask.

At The Top is open Tuesday through Saturday; Thursday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Cortez said clients can also call for appointments. The number is 369-2007.

"And of course, we take walk-ins, but if someone wants special time appointment, he or she should call head of time.

Fridays are often the busiest days at the salon, but Cortez says other days are equally busy.

"It just depends on what is going on that brings people in to have us help them look their best," she said.
