Education Notes (7/30/14)

July 30, 2014
Lehigh Acres Citizen

Back to School section live on web site, app

The wall calendar may only show it is July, but the first day of school is right around the corner. The first day of the 2014-15 school year is Aug. 18.

To help families prepare, the district has created the annual Back to School section on its web site: www.leeschools.net and on its branded app, available in the App Store for Apple devices and the Play Store for Android devices.

The Back to School section contains links to the most requested and popular areas of the web site. From lunch menu information to school supply lists to school bell times to registration information, it is a one-stop-shop for all the back to school information families need.

The goal is to provide as much information in one, centrally located and easy-to-use place as possible. However, if there is anything that a family is looking for but cannot find in the 2014-15 Back to School section, they should contact their child's school directly as that is the best source of information for each school.

To download the district's app and access back to school information on the go, families should search for "Lee County Public Schools" in the app store for their device. The app is free and is black and gold in color.

The district will be trending our back to school activities on Instagram and Twitter using #LeeBtS.

McDonald's to host school supply drive

From Aug. 1-3, 50 McDonald's restaurants across Southwest Florida will host a school supply drive where customers can drop off supplies in the restaurants.

In Lee County, all supplies will be donated to the Foundation for Lee County Public Schools.

McDonald's local owner-operators say they are excited to have the opportunity to support local schools and students with this new activity.

Many local McDonald's already support local education through hosting "McTeacher Night" fundraisers where a portion of sales goes back to local schools.

Florida SouthWestern to offer special hours

Florida SouthWestern State College, formerly known as Edison State College, will offer special Saturday hours at all locations on Aug. 2 from 9 a.m. to noon.

All enrollment service offices will be open during these times to assist students in completing any unfinished business for fall enrollment.

The locations are as follows:

- Thomas Edison (Lee) Campus, at 8099 College Parkway, Fort Myers, Building S

- Charlotte Campus, at 26300 Airport Road, Punta Gorda, Building J

- Collier Campus, at 7505 Grand Lely Drive, Naples, Building M

- Hendry/Glades Center, at 1092 E. Cowboy Way, LaBelle, Building A

"We know that sometimes it is hard to stop by the college during the week to complete the necessary paperwork for enrollment and the opportunity to register for classes," Mark Bukowski, director of admissions, said. "By offering Saturday hours on Aug. 2, FSW is welcoming those who are in the process to finish what they need to and ask questions. We also welcome anyone interested in starting the admissions process as well during this time frame."

During the special Saturday hours, students and applicants can submit documents necessary to complete the admissions process, finalize course registration, pay for classes, meet with financial aid representatives and ask questions related to the admission and registration process.

For more information, call (800) 749-2322 or visit: www.FSW.edu.

For those interested in starting the admissions process, visit: www.FSW.edu/admissions.
