Fall, spring programs at Caloosahatchee Regional Park

Guided Nature Walk

- First Saturday and third Tuesday of each month (Sept. to May) from 9-11 a.m.

Join park staff on a stroll through natural plant communities. Participants should be able to walk approximately 1 miles. Dress appropriately and bring a water bottle. Meet at the main entrance at 18500 N. River Road. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Free with paid parking; registration not required. Limit of 25; call ahead for groups of five or more.

12th Annual River, Roots and Ruts Trail Run

- Jan. 11 at 8 a.m. for half-marathon and two-person relay, with 5K Fun Run at 8:15 a.m.

Registration is open. The main event is a 13.1-mile half-marathon utilizing both sides of the park. For those in training for a race or just off one, or for those who may want to experience a little less nature, there is a two-person half-marathon relay over the same course. For those who feel that 3.1 miles is just the right amount of nature, there is a 5K Fun Run along the wide nature trails on the south side of the park. - Sept. 10 from 10-11:30 a.m.: A Frog's Life

- Oct. 1 from 10-11:30 a.m.: Nature Senses

- Nov. 5 from 10-11:30 a.m.: Birds

- Dec. 3 from 10-11:30 a.m.: Camouflage Critters

- Jan. 7 from 10-11:30 a.m.: Nature Mysteries

- Feb. 4 from 10-11:30 a.m.: Space Cadets

- March 4 from 10-11:30 a.m.: Animal Tracks

- April 1 from 10-11:30 a.m.: Baby Animals

- May 6 from 10-11:30 a.m.: Web Weavers

The preschool programs generally include a story, fun lesson, hike, game and craft. For ages 3 to 6. Cost is $5 per child. A parking fee is required. Programs either meet at the main entrance at 18500 N. River Road or at the campground entrance at 19130 N. River Road. Registration is required.

Oxbow Kayak Clinic

- Sept. 4 from 9-11 a.m.

- Feb. 5 from 9-11 a.m.

The class will introduce you to the basic techniques of paddling and then you will have the opportunity to use your new skills for a guided trip. Paddle the oxbow islands of the Caloosahatchee River for a two-hour guided and informational tour. Children under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. All kayaking equipment is provided. Bring your own water, sunscreen, binoculars, clothing and shoes that can get wet. Meet at the campground entrance at 19130 N. River Road. Cost is $25 per person. Registration is required.

Cypress Creek Kayak

- Sept. 18 from 9-11 a.m.

- Oct. 9 from 9-11 a.m.

- Nov. 13 from 9-11 a.m.

- Dec. 11 from 9-11 a.m.

- Jan. 15 from 9-11 a.m.

- Feb. 12 from 9-11 a.m.

- March 12 from 9-11 a.m.

- April 16 from 9-11 a.m.

This slow-paced paddle is great for all experience levels. Children under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. All kayaking equipment is provided. Bring water, sunscreen, binoculars, clothing and shoes that can get wet. Meet at the campground entrance at 19130 N. River Road. Cost is $25 per person. Registration is required.

Home School Programs

- Sept. 25 from 2-4 p.m.: Geocaching

- Oct. 16 from 2-4 p.m.: Archery

- Nov. 20 from 5-7 p.m.: Astronomy

- Dec. 18 from 2-4 p.m.: Wood burning

- Jan. 22 from 9-11 a.m.: Birding

- Feb. 19 from 2-4 p.m.: Archery

- March 19 from 8-10 a.m.: Fishing

- May 14 from 9-11 a.m.: Kayaking

Age requirements and price varies from $5 to $10 for each program; a parking fee is required. Programs meet at either the main entrance at 18500 N. River Road or at the campground entrance at 19130 N. River Road. Registration is required.

Earth Day Program

- April 18 from 9-11 a.m.

Celebrate Earth Day by painting bird houses at the park. After they are painted, participants will have the opportunity to find a spot at the park to hang their masterpiece. Open to all ages. Cost is $5 and covers the cost of a small birdhouse and painting materials. A parking fee is required. Feel free to bring an additional bird house of your choice to donate to the park. Meets at the main entrance at 18500 N. River Road. Registration required.

Caloosahatchee to Hickey's Creek Kayak

- Oct. 30 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

- Jan. 29 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

- Feb. 26 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

- March 26 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

- April 30 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

This kayak trip begins and ends at the Caloosahatchee Regional Park campground. The guided tour travels along the Great Calusa Blueway, which includes Hickey's Creek, one of the area's most scenic waterways. We paddle an hour and a half to Hickey's Creek Mitigation Park, eat lunch and stretch our legs on a hike before paddling back to Caloosahatchee Regional Park. This trip is best for paddlers with some kayaking experience and/or in good physical condition for a five-mile roundtrip paddle. Children under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. All kayaking equipment is provided. Bring your own water, lunch, sunscreen, binoculars, clothing and shoes that can get wet. Meet at the campground entrance of Caloosahatchee Regional Park at 19130 N. River Road. Cost is $40 per person. Registration is required.
