Do you homework

To the editor:

The 2015 annual report for the Lee County Sheriff’s Office is out and available for public inspection. This report compares 2014 to 2015.

I encourage the public to check out this report. It can be found under the “About Us” tab on the LCSO homepage in “Public Reports.”

There is nothing in this report to indicate the South District, which includes Bonita Springs, has had a 46 percent decrease in crime. I mention this because I came across a citizen who shared this statistic, so I want to encourage the public to do its own homework.

She did not identify her source.

Some of the facts in the annual report I find disturbing are the increase in forced sex crimes of 38.33 percent and the overall increase in violent crimes of 19.37 percent. There were also 10 more people killed on Lee County roadways and 1,161 more traffic crashes.

Do your own homework and arm yourself with the facts, especially during this campaign season.
