Draft provided social interaction

By Staff | Mar 16, 2016

To the editor:

The greatest social interaction program in the United States of America was that of the draft.

This program promoted more values than we could have imagined. The draft gave all who served a new found patriotism to their country coupled with an interaction between the rich and the poor, the white, the black, the Hispanic and other ethnic groups. The camaraderie provided a family structure and moral compass that may have been absent by some in their early years. And, it afforded an opportunity of training in all job aspects we see in the civilian sector that otherwise would not have been availed to many.

Every citizen of the United States should be required to serve in some capacity for their nation. Options available can be that of the military or other social programs such as the Peace Corps or past VISTA programs for two years. Evading the draft, as in the past, would not be available. Being excused would only happen in the cases of extreme medical conditions. Service to our nation should be a prerequisite to holding any political office.

It is time to quit making excuses for and protecting the criminal behaviors we face in our nation’s cities today by our administration, some congressional delegates and some of those newfound candidates, and act in a responsible manner in providing a hand up instead of a hand out in unifying the goals for being accountable for all our actions in providing for a greater America.

The greatest gift that we individuals can give is that of the giving of ourselves. Only then will we begin a newfound nation building.
